Methodist Bishops Repent Iraq War 'Complicity'
Edited on Sun Nov-13-05 06:55 PM by Christa
From Foxnews

WASHINGTON — Ninety-five bishops from President Bush's church said Thursday they repent their "complicity" in the "unjust and immoral" invasion and occupation of Iraq.

"In the face of the United States administration's rush toward military action based on misleading information, too many of us were silent," said a statement of conscience signed by more than half of the 164 retired and active United Methodist bishops worldwide.

President Bush is a member of the United Methodist Church, according to various published biographies. The White House did not return a request for comment on the bishops' statement.

Although United Methodist leadership has opposed the Iraq war in the past, this is the first time that individual bishops have confessed to a personal failure to publicly challenge the buildup to the war.

1. Sucks to be him now!
Everybody can't stand him, even his own church.

B*** is the kind of guy who doesn't hear the fire alarm until he is standing in the ashes.

4. Hmm... aren't these the same people who're continually held up as examples
... of "good" or "real" christians here on DU?

You know, the old "even Bush's church opposed the war" folks? Now we learn they fault themselves for failing to speak up.

I wonder if there are some other issues they'd like to get more vocal about now, too?

Lesbian Minister Defrocked By United Methodist Church

By Alan Cooperman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, November 1, 2005; Page A03

The highest court in the United Methodist Church yesterday defrocked a lesbian minister in Philadelphia and reinstated a Virginia pastor who had been suspended for denying a gay man membership in his congregation.

The nine-member Judicial Council also rejected a declaration by Methodists in the Pacific Northwest that there is a "difference of opinion among faithful Christians regarding sexual orientation and practice." The court said the declaration was a "historical statement without prescriptive force" and had no bearing on church laws.

The decisions amounted to a clean sweep for conservatives who believe gay sex is a sin and want to strictly enforce a Methodist rule against "self-avowed, practicing homosexuals" in ordained ministry. They were the latest in a series of defeats for liberals in the nation's second-largest Protestant denomination who have sought to be more welcoming toward gay men and lesbians.

The court rulings, which are final, put an end to the Rev. Irene "Beth" Stroud's hopes of remaining an ordained Methodist minister. Stroud, 35, said she thought she "was prepared for whatever might happen" but found it impossible to master her emotions yesterday. "It's been tears off and on all morning," she said.

"We would have made the statement regardless of who the president was. It was not meant to be either partisan or to single out any one person," Carder said. "It was the recognition that we are all part of the decision and we are all part of a democratic society. We all bear responsibility."

Right, it's the fault of those of us who knew they were full of shit and did everything we could to expose the greedy lying bastards.

6. I was wondering? Think the Methodists will refuse Bush
communion like the Catholics refused Kerry? Inquiring minds want to know.

8. Progressive Methodists
Methodists have always been progressive. They went into the poorest neighborhoods and helped people that the Church of England would not get near. The Salvation Army was founded by Methodists.

You will find political arguments in and out of the Church. Social righteousness is an essential Methodist value.

The economic statement:

Position statements:

-----------

Bush panders to religious organizations for political and economic support. He does not act like a Methodist. Being a Methodist is about your actions.
