Woodward's source is Hadley!!! Raw Story Scoop
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 04:12 PM by DemsUnited
National Security Adviser was Woodward's source, attorneys say

Larisa Alexandrovna and Jason Leopold

National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley was the senior administration official who told Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward that Valerie Plame Wilson was a covert CIA officer, attorneys close to the investigation and intelligence officials tell RAW STORY.

Testifying under oath Monday to Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, Woodward recounted a casual conversation he had with Hadley, these sources say. Hadley did not return a call seeking comment.

Woodward said he was told that it was “no big deal” that former Ambassador Joseph Wilson was sent to Niger to investigate the veracity of the Bush Administration’s claims that Iraq was seeking uranium from Niger. According to the attorneys, he said Hadley dismissed the trip by saying his wife, a covert CIA officer who worked on WMD issues, had recommended him.

<snip>

Oh my heart it skips a beat. Remember, Hadley is the guy Rove sent the smoking gun email to after he leaked to Matt Cooper.

Sure smells alot like criminal conspiracy to me...

When I read Plan of Attack and the issue of the 16 words in the SotU came up, I remember getting from the book that Hadley let it get into the speech. He didn't pass up to Rice et al that the docs were forgeries

Damn. Check out the third paragraph. Why did Hadley let Bu$h* speak with Woodward about classified information?

<snip>

In his most recent book, Bush at War, Woodward says he was given access to classified minutes of National Security Council meetings. Both Rice and Hadley were major players in these meetings.

President Bush sat for lengthy interviews for his book, often speaking about classified information, Woodward later said. The Post editor added that he was surprised by Bush’s frankness.

"Certainly Richard Nixon would not have allowed reporters to question him like that,” he said. “Bush's father wouldn't allow it. Clinton wouldn't allow it.”

Hadley served as Deputy National Security Advisor during the first term of the Bush presidency under then-National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. Former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, who is now under indictment in Fitzgerald’s case for obstruction of justice and perjury, along with Rice and Hadley, were members of the National Security Council and of the White House Iraq Group, which was tasked with selling the war in Iraq to the public.

Niger to investigate the veracity of the Bush Administration’s claims that Iraq was seeking uranium from Niger

Re >>Clarification: Due to an editing error, the first edition of this article was unclear about whether Woodward was told Plame was covert. Woodward was only told she was a CIA analyst.<<

Hadley worked for the National Security Agency. He was Deputy National Security Advisor at the time, right? That means he OF ALL PEOPLE had *NO* business shooting off his mouth about CIA operatives to ANYONE! You can see someone like Rove using the excuse that "I didn't know she was covert" (although I don't believe him either), but Rove is basically a political operative. He doesn't work for the National Security Agency. If Hadley didn't know her status (unlikely), he should have erred on the side of caution and kept his big mouth shut! In other words, I don't see how he can use that as an excuse, i.e. "I didn't know she was covert."

Sheesh, doesn't national security mean ANYTHING to these people? They hardly even bother to pretend it does. Hadley seems to know as much about national security as Brownie knows about disaster relief!

27. Ok, i'm still confused.
Hiya all,

I'm new to posting at this board. I get struck every time i hear or read about Plame-gate. Namely, the administrations reasons for mentioning her. Rove's statement that she's "Fair Game", etc.

The whole point was to discredit Wilson by saying in effect "he only got that job because of his wife, so he can't be trusted" They were almost more eloquent. But the gist is such.

So here's what always sticks with me about Rove, Cheney's, Libby's stance regarding outing Plame:

Doesn't that argument basically discredit the majority of political appointees in the past 5 years? Off the top of my head, Ridge, Chertoff, Brown, Miers, Rice (who has been underqualified in all of her role), Gannon etc.

Didn't they all get THEIR jobs because they used to get drunk with the president, send him love letters, subjugate the country's poor for him, create new liability loopholes allowing oil firms to use weak and barely seaworthy ships, and cover up his crimes, etc? From what i've learned, basically anyone who disagreed got shafted, college roomies and drinking buddies are now getting paid by our hard-earned dollars.

I'm wondering why no-one has mentioned this: Not only did they break the law and potentially threaten Mrs. Plame's contacts who may or may not known she was working in a government role - but they did it for a weak argument and a text book example of why it's bad to throw stones from your glass house's balcony. Namely, Cronyism. Every time i hear Rove or Cheney saying their goal was to show his stance was suspect because his wife recommended him, i want to ask "So, i guess we should be suspect of your words too then, since you appoint buffoons with no qualifications all the time, yes? "

Am i off here?

Oh, and hi to the community.

-d

And I think that they would have no good answer for it, though they would counter that all their cronies were well qualified :P
And even though we've seen the idiots that they put into the most important positions in our lives (heck of a job, Brownie!) their base still holds in the mid-30's

That's the thing about these guys; they love to point out the speck in your eye, even though the beam in theirs is big enough to hurt somebody. Plus, that whole thing about Wilson's wife sending him to Niger is also false, from what I understand.

34. FOCUS!! They blew Plame's cover to endanger her and send a message...
The main motive of Bu$hitCo was calculated revenge, regardless of the consequences to others who worked with her, the CIA, America, etc.

First, they punished the Wilson's and endangered their lives. Joe Wilson has mentioned that they were threatened a several occasions since this because of her identity being blown.

Secondly, and more importantly, by doing this, they also sent a very strong message to other potential whistle blowers and those who speak truth to power. That is, we will destroy you, literally!

The attempt to discredit or minimize Wilson's report is just after spin to take the eye of the real crime. This "his wife sent him" is just their fart-screen.

So, Rawstory is positing that it was National Security Advisor Hadley that outed Ms. Wilson to Woodward. Hadley – the one that got promoted to Rice’s old job. All this makes sense. You do dumb shit in the Bush Administration you don’t get fired (despite what Bush says), you get promoted. Now on the other hand, if you do good work that embarrasses the White House, then of course you'll get demoted, like whistleblower Bunnatine Greenhouse found out.

it WASN'T a big deal! Seriously! That would fall in line with the time line and when it WASN'T a big deal.

But as critics began getting some traction and backing up their claims with facts, the WHIG group (probably with Rove as the mastermind for marketing political hit jobs) had an 'aha!!' moment. That's when they opted to start planting the seeds...all they needed to take root was one and his name was Novak.

56. For CIA leak junkies, another question to ask...
From published reports I've read today, Woodward was identified to Fitzgerald as a recipient of Plame information in June 2003, by his unidentified source, who refused to release him to talk about their conversation to the press, but did release him to testify in front of the new FGJ.

If Stephen Hadley was the source, as Raw Story tells us, the question we gotta ask ourselves, is why did Stephen Hadley mention his conversation with Woodward at such a late date in this investigation?

From what we learned today, Woodward wasn't going to tell anyone about this conversation, he was "hunkered down" to use his parlance, and wanted to avoid being dragged in front of the FGJ.

What would cause Fitzgerald to not call this witness to the first FGJ? Obviously because he didn't get this information in time to go in front of that FGJ that expired on 10/31/05, a Monday. So three days later, on Thursday, November 3rd, Woodward is testifying in front of a new FGJ.

Something happened to move the investigation toward Hadley. And I think what might have occurred, was Rove shifting blame toward Hadley to keep from being indicted at the last minute. Rove "gave Fitzgerald pause at the last minute", according to Rove's attorney. How do you do that?

Remember Rove's, email between he and Hadley about, I think, Novak planning to write an article about Wilson's wife? That shows both were in the know about Valerie Plame's identity. If Rove points toward Hadley and gives the SP info on Hadley he didn't have before, then Hadley scrambles and says, "Woodward can confirm that I thought Plame was an CIA analyst, not covert", in an attempt to escape the Intelligence agent Identity Protection Act by ignorance.

And that puts Woodward in the FGJ.

I just don't know where that puts Hadley and Rove. I guess still in the target sights of the SP and potentially part of a criminal conspiracy under the Espionage Act, as all were in the White House Iraq Group, along with Libby.

65. Details now at RawStory >>>>
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Sources_who_identified_Hadley_as_Woodwards_1118.html

Despite news reports Thursday asserting National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley was not the source who told Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward that Valerie Plame Wilson was a CIA agent, sources with direct knowledge of the case still maintain that Hadley was the “senior administration official” who met with Woodward.

The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and Reuters published stories late Thursday in which anonymous officials denied that Hadley was Woodward’s source. Asked Friday if he was the source, Hadley remarked, "I've also seen press reports from White House officials saying that I am not one of his sources." Leaving the room, he refused to answer directly.

“It is what it is,” he quipped.

...

Attorneys close to the CIA leak investigation reasserted late Thursday that Hadley approached Fitzgerald after Libby’s indictment and alerted him to the June 2003 conversation he had with Woodward, and that he subsequently told Woodward he could testify.

When pressed further, the sources told RAW STORY there is a record at the National Security Council of Hadley’s meeting with Woodward.
