1. Blitzer just read a statement from the WH
"It's baffling" that Murtha would align with Michael Moore in opposition to the war.

36. Why do media let the WH issue statements like that?
If the WH can't have a real person come out and say it to the press, then why repeat it?

What ever happened to "we asked Scott McClellan to comment, and he wouldn't respond?"

69. Because the WH can release any statement they want...
The media just reports it. The media doesn't "let" the WH release statements.

And why oh why do I have to share a name with that piece of shit. McClellan that is, not Murtha. At least I only got one C so I can prove I'm not related.

26. Here it is, from The White House website
Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak:

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Congressman Murtha is a respected veteran and politician who has a record of supporting a strong America. So it is baffling that he is endorsing the policy positions of Michael Moore and the extreme liberal wing of the Democratic party. The eve of an historic democratic election in Iraq is not the time to surrender to the terrorists. After seeing his statement, we remain baffled -- nowhere does he explain how retreating from Iraq makes America safer.

So y'all should take that into account. All the OTHER Democrats who AREN'T part of the "extreme liberal wing" think things are just ducky!

to further build support for the war, but the underlying motives have mainly to do with money, greed, and protection of oil assets, which is actually putting Israel at risk. We surrendered to the Saudis (who's funding was responsible for 9/11) once we started the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

24. I was watching "The Situation Room" when Wolf Blitzer read this
Dear God, these clowns have really hit rock bottom. Not a shred of decency or honor in the entire bunch. As if they couldn't go any lower.

Here's Representative John Murtha, a deeply respected Member of Congress (and a renowned hawk), with a 37-year-long record in the Marine Corps, a Vietnam War veteran, who has served the people of the 12th District of Pennsylvania proudly and without a hint of scandal. He delivers a powerful, emotional, common-sense speech, laying out all the reasons why we need to get out of Iraq, and this despicable, conniving cabal trivializes it by pandering to their base and playing politics.

Talk about an act of desperation. This "response" is just absolutely sickening and revolting to anybody with a brain, a conscience and a scintilla of emotions.

Bush is completely misreading the polls and reacting without thinking. Murtha is not reflecting the view of Moore or the views of democratic party "extremists." Murtha is reflecting the views of mainstream America. When you start calling the majority of Americans "extremist" you are alienating yourself from the majority of Americans.

It pissed me off so badly, I resolved to be a McGovern delegate, and did just that. I was freshly out of my tours of duty, and enraged that a war veteran like McGovern, who flew many bombing missions in WWII, was being treated so poorly. And who were his critics?

Nixon? Another paper tiger who hid out during the war with a Dick Cheney like job in the Navy.

Hagel, McCain, Kerrey, Murka ... these guys need ball boys to carry their nuts around, but they have to be castigated by the likes of Bush, Cheney, McClellan, et al., none of whom could acquit himself in a fist fight with a 9 year old girl.

When McClellan slams Michael Moore - someone who has done extensive research on politics and war, communicates regularly with the troops to see what they need and how things are going, and tries to let us know how this war is hurting us all - I know the Bush administration's plan for our country and the world is pure evil. Their feeble attempts at trying to refocus the public's attention off Bush and on to Michael Moore is laughable.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/18/politics/18military.html

When asked about Mr. Cheney's remarks on Wednesday, Mr. Murtha replied sarcastically: "I like guys who've never been there that criticize us who've been there. I like that. I like guys who got five deferments and never been there and send people to war and then don't like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done."

In the Vietnam era, Mr. Cheney had five deferments and did not serve in the military.

51. my question is
do these people listen? Murtha's proposal called for redeployment. He brought up many credible ideas to stay (in Kuwait & possibly Japan) to help against terrorist outbreaks if necessary. It is frickin' ridiculous for the jack asses to characterize this proposal as "cut & run" & "surrender". He also brought up very logical and state recognized arguments that terrorism has increased since we invaded & that terrorists might be less likely to attack patrols if Americans were not a part of them. Some jackass RW senator for California said we cannot leave until the Iraqis are able to protect their government. We can't even do that with all of our troops there. Iraqi government officials are killed on our watch almost everyday. Everyday I witness what is going on in the government I'm more depressed that these folks are not only ignorant, but also arrogant & the combination of the two is maddening.

When they try to equate Michael Moore to Congressman Murtha we should applaud and repeat it over and over. Because what they are doing is expanding the spectrum they paint as their enemy. When regular non-political folks hear that someone as well-respected as Murtha is being called a "terrist supporter", they are disgusted and appalled.

These idiots are truly painting themselves into a corner. I say let's give them more paint as they increase the size of the brush.

53. Un-freaking-believable.
The White House is melting down. Good. I'm sorry, but it has to happen. Cleansed by burning. America shouldn't have to go through this, but after letting *'s thugs take us as far as they did there's no other way. I dig Michael Moore, but in the thug lexicon aligning Murtha with Moore is one step removed from calling him a Nazi. "Have you no shame, Scotty?"

with * out of the country, busy "presidentin' & diplomatin'", & "blameless" as "heck", they're trying to provoke an "outrageous" response from MM, and use it to tar THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS.

good luck with that. what a transparent strategy. the Rove well is dry.

57. failed policy wrapped in illusion
Did you see how plain old pissed off Murtha was during that press conference? This has to have been simmering in his head for awhile.

Side note: John Kerry is on the radio (NPR) refuting Bush claims of they-saw-same-intelligence crap.

Per JK:
1. intelligence shown the Senate was incomplete,
2. Senate vote did not necessitate war,
3. inspectors were not given a chance,
4. Murtha a great Congressman, expert on defense.

is campaign!
Its all smoke and mirrors, and photo-ops and fake turkeys and "Mission Accomplished" banners. And 2 1/2 years later, they are still trying to sell this war to the American People.

68. I have to share what I just saw on CNN now.
A brief report on Murtha (a two time recipient of the Purple Heart) revealed that he was visiting a comatose man who was injured by friendly fire and so was not eligible for a Purple Heart.

The young man's father stood by his son's bedside, stroking his hand. Murtha said to the father: "if they don't give him the Purple Heart, I'll give him one of mine."

70. Ok Freepers, you got your orders now.
Go and tell everyone that Murtha is the same as Michael Moore. Go on now. Type up your e-mail messages and send them to all your friends. Don't know what I'm saying, you say? For once, you are only playing dumb. We know your standard procedure: use e-mail to send out fake messages to all your "friends" and relatives to get the word out that Murtha didn't get those Purple Crosses.

Oh yeah, make sure that you don't forget to smear other aspects of his character. We're sure that you'll come up with a doozy, like saying that he only retired from the Marines with the sole purpose of getting into political office. Maybe you'll get a juicy one and say that he spent some of his career in the reserves, so that a real Marine.

C'mon, we know you're salivating at the chance to flood other forums out there and in the process try to refine your line of bull. Maybe McClellan gave you the idea. Maybe he got it from you. Tit for tat after all. I'm sure that you'll try and press your message forth and get it out to the right-wing radio show hosts. You might even get so far as to get it sent out to Fox News. After all, it worked with that lie about Al Gore claiming to invent the internet (even though he was given a Webby award for his accomplishments with regards to the internet that you used to smear him). It also worked with the
"Swift-Boating" of John Kerry last year although people started catching on to what you were doing.

You might end up believing it after you're done. You might not. It doesn't matter because you're lying for George W. Bush and therefore you are serving God as far as you're concerned, right? Right?

79. Michael Moore's response
Sorry, George, I'm In the Majority ...
11/19/05

Dear Mr. Bush:

I would like to extend my hand and invite you to join us, the mainstream American majority. We, the people -- that's the majority of the people -- share these majority opinions:

1. Going to war was a mistake -- a big mistake. (link)

2. You and your administration misled us into this war. (link)

3. We want the war ended and our troops brought home. (link)

4. We don't trust you. (link)

Now, I know this is a bitter pill to swallow. Iraq was going to be your great legacy. Now, it's just your legacy. It didn't have to end up this way.

This week, when Republicans and conservative Democrats started jumping ship, you lashed out at them. You thought the most damning thing you could say to them was that they were "endorsing the policy positions of Michael Moore and the extreme liberal wing of the Democratic party." I mean, is that the best you can do to persuade them to stick with you -- compare them to me? You gotta come up with a better villain. For heaven's sakes, you had a hundred-plus million other Americans who think the same way I do -- and you could have picked on any one of them!

But hey, why not cut out the name-calling and the smearing and just do the obvious thing: Come join the majority! Be one of us, your fellow Americans! Is it really that hard? Is there really any other choice? George, take a walk on the wild side!

Your loyal representative from the majority,

Michael Moore
