Latest reason for war..."to support our troops"
Edited on Thu Nov-17-05 08:59 PM by capaylib
I am noticing an increasing number of the warmongers using the argument that withdrawing from Iraq now will mean our troops died in vein and therefore we need to keep fighting the war to honor our troops. Are they kidding?

1. I'd laugh if it weren't so sad
Many troops did die in vain, that's a fact many don't want to face.

2. Bush started that rhetoric
Back when he was first defending his war. He insisted we had to continue the war and win it, so that those who'd already died would not have died in vain. I think that's when Cindy Sheehan began asking "What noble cause?"

18. I remember it well.
"If we leave now, those who died will have died for nothing."

Same shit, different decade.

5. Yeah, I've heard it before, but now it seems to be emerging
as justification for being there in the same way that WMD's, the liberation of the Iraqi people, fighting the terrorists there so we don't fight them here, blah..blah, were. It is the same logic people use when there losing money at the craps table that cause them to lose even more, but with much higher stakes and more tragic consequences.

I feel like soon I will here someone say we are fighting this war for the soldiers that lost their lives and we did it pre-emptively because we knew they were going to die...anybody following my "doublespeak" train here?

6. so...more soldiers should die
for no other reason than to honor the ones that already died? Maybe to take some innocent civilians with them - will that help?

7. There is a affect in wartime...
"Chuck died to take this hill, and we ain't giving it up!"

Soldiers in heavy combat place great reliance on the guys at thier side. The 'Band of Brothers' is not just a movie title (the term was used by Shakespear!), it's a reflection on the attitude of soldiers. It's a powerful meme: Chuck died, and we can't let him die in vain: used for centuries to convince troops to hold a piece of ground. Sometimes it takes off and runs on it's own: we need to hold this ground not because it's vital to our defense, or any valid military reason, but because too many people died taking it.

Just one of the pointless things that happens in wartime. I wonder how the chickenhawks learned about it? I know they never experienced it firsthand.

(I learned about it reading about the Civil War. No, I have no real combat experience.)

16. Dead is dead. The reason matters not to the dead.
Better there should be no more to join them, just to assuage the living.
