Great fun tonight on CSPAN
The House came back in live about an hour and a half ago. The repugs are apparently actually going to try to pass the reconciliation bill tonight. Despite what happened this afternoon. Despite having to pull this bill last week.

Tune in and watch the fireworks. Guaranteed to be entertaining. They started the rule around 9:30 PM ET and have a one hour rule debate to be followed by 2 hour debate on reconciliation itself.

8. I was just thinking that
A little background -- they've already gone through a point of order vote on a challenge raised by McDermott. Sander Levin got pretty hot about the whole procedure. The point of order failed on straight party line vote but, in the course of the vote, there were at least 6 defecting repugs and 3 Dem defectors.

Ray LaHood is in the chair, which he always is when things are expected to be hot. And, after the vote on the point of order, LaHood had to call out the groups "at the rear of the chamber on the majority side" for being out of order.

The hardliners must have won the debate in the repug caucus. And I guess Roy Blunt wants to play super high stakes today. Or maybe they're just willing to go down in flames and start blaming the Dems. That's what they do best.

35. Pence quoting JFKennedy
"whatever the outcome is tonight"

Wow!! The firebrand repugs really must have convinced the leadership to bring it to the floor and fight, even if they go down in flames. And, perhaps, the reason that the little repugs are baiting the Blue Dogs is to try to shake some of them into voting for reconciliation ... because they know that's the only way it passes.

This day has been AMAZING!

11. Garrett
http://www.dumpgarrett.com/

Why is Scott Garrett hiding from his record?
Garrett is anti-abortion even when a woman has been violently raped or is a victim of incest. 70% of people in our district have said that they are pro-choice. Garrett voted for the so-called "partial birth abortion" bill even though that procedure was only performed in extreme cases including threat to the life of the mother. - 10/02/03.

Against Women's Rights! The American Association of University Women gives Garrett a rating of 0. However, the extremist "Concerned Women for America" gives Garrett a rating of 100.

Enemy of the Environment! Environmental groups give Garrett a rating of 10 or less, the worst environmental record of any politician in America since such ratings were introduced in the 1970's.

Against Civil Rights! 2 of the 3 largest civil rights groups in America give Garrett a rating of 0.

Pro-Development and Against Wildlife! Wildlife groups give Garrett a rating of 11.

Far to the Right of New Jersey! The extremist right wing Christian Coalition gives Garrett a rating of 100. (0-100)

Against Education! The National Education Association gives Garrett a rating of 17.

Commitment to Middle East Peace? Jews for Peace in Palestine and Israel (JPPI) gives Garrett a rating of minus 2 on a scale of minus 7 to plus 9.

Against a Woman's Right to Choose! NARAL and Planned Parenthood give Scott Garrett a rating of 0.

Pro Assault Weapons! The Brady Campaign to Stop Gun Violence gives Garrett a rating of 0. Against Working Families!

Every major labor union in America gives Scott Garrett a below 30 rating.

14. earlier, he referred to Louise Slaughter
as the "distinguished gentlelady from {Rochester}" -- don't remember the exact town. But this is a game that Hollywood Dave Dreier perfected. Gene Taylor (D-MS), in a debate after Katrina, really got under Dreier's skin by referring to him as the "gentleman from Hollywood."

Anyway, Putnam seems to want to model himself after Dreier. And don't forget that Putnam was with W on 9/11. He had just been elected and was traveling with bush on Air Force One that day.

yes. they are only now debating the rule which will allow them to debate the bill. the rule allows for 2 hours of debate on the bill. so, if the rule passes, two more hours of debate (which, of course, will take longer than 2 hours to complete), followed by the vote which could last longer than the Medicare Rx drug vote which lasted 3 hours.....

It's going to be a long, long night.

So, folks, if you're inclined, recommend this for greatest so that others will be alerted and tune in.

According to her article in the local paper a couple of weeks ago, Clinton is responsible for our higher heating bills this winter. Also, "liberals" do not want to lower the budget or else they would pass the wonderful budget-lowering plan she was pushing.

I've written to the TN Dem Party and begged them to make sure she's not unopposed in '06!! She's Frist's Mini-Me.

Can't stomach the giveaways to the rich while others are sacrificing everything.

"I've got a kid who lost both legs in Iraq volunteering to work the phones and help victims of Katrina."

"The cruellest lie of all: The only way you can help people who have lost everything is by hurting somebody else."

Even Howdy Doody got knocked off his game by that one.

89. no vote on the rule
LaHood called a vote on the amendment and then a vote on the rule & he didn't really wait for anyone to ask for a recorded vote on the rule but certainly it didn't appear that any Dem was asking for a recorded vote either.

Probably falls under the category of the Dems wanting to keep their powder dry. Perhaps they talked to the on-the-fence repugs and they asked them not to call for a vote on the rule so that they wouldn't have to have their arms twisted twice.

Curious strategy, though.

109. the budget reconciliation act
This is the bill that they pulled at the end of last week, after stripping ANWR from it, because they didn't think they had the votes. It was planned to come up tonight but, after the repugs lost the health & education budget bill, they went into recess and almost certainly had a caucus of some sort. It seems to me that the firebrands wanted the fight, wanted to show they are tough even if they lost the earlier budget vote. So they're back!!!! And my guess is the repug leadership doesn't know whether they have the votes or not. They're just rolling the dice. The baiting of the Blue Dogs is to try to get them to break ranks but I don't see that happening.

128. Nussle on Matthew in the Bible
Edited on Thu Nov-17-05 11:19 PM by kainah
Matthew was referring to Jesus's speech to people. Jesus did not say, raise a bunch of taxes, create a thousand, hundred thousand page tax code, hire millions of government workers, build hundreds of big white fancy buildings, stick them in there, create a system, pass a bunch of mandates, regulations, all sorts of paperwork, measure your compassion in increases only to feed the hungry and naked. He said, YOU DO IT. As an individual. So don't measure compassion by government, measure it by what you are willing to do for the least of your brethren.

edited to add: the above is a faithful transciption of Nussle's comments, done by the miracle of PVR.

Whew!!!! Where did he get THAT bible????

Listen, lady, you leave your kids at home and get out there and get a job. Mothers being sent to work without one thin dime in child support help. And you say no child left behind.

Don't you have any decency left over there at all???

of course, I've openly confessed to being a CSPAN junkie for years. I once had to replace my TV because the CSPAN logo was so completely burned into the screen it was distracting when you watched anything else.

Who is this little twirp, Patrick McHenry (R-NC) -- the repugs really are scraping the barrel, aren't they? And Spratt takes a nice little dig at him. ("You may be too young to remember...")

199. the tax increase was under Clinton
it was in '93 with Al Gore casting the tie-breaking vote in the Senate and the House also passing it by one. (Making it easy for the repugs to say that every single Dem who voted for it was "the one" that passed it.)

But it was NOT the largest tax increase in history. That's just repug talking points. Can't provide you with a link and documentation on that right now but do some googling and you'll find the documentation.

187. I think they brought it up
because the firebrands forced them to do it. I think the leadership thinks it would be better to lose both at once (the health/education bill this aft & this reconciliation bill) if they're going to lose both ultimately.

I don't think the leadership is sure they have the votes. I think they just had their arms tied by a rebellion of the young turks ... who may well be really overreaching.
