Looking for a DUer who worked for Ohio election reform proposals '05
About a week ago I read some posts from a DUer who worked for the election reform proposals in Ohio and was not surprised that they didn't pass. If I remember correctly, the poster didn't feel the vote was stolen. I have tried searching for this thread with no luck. Can anyone help me find it?

4. Thanks for the reply.
I am curious what you think about the pre-election polls verse the actual results? If you have already posted your thoughts on this, maybe you can give me a link to it?

I ask because I am little disappointed with how defeatist some DUers are about elections. I am all for election reforms, but I would think that our successes in 05 (CA, NJ, VA), would show people that we can win elections. In VA, a state Bush won by 8%, Dem Kaine won by 6%, much more than polls predicted. I never read any comments on how Democrats OUTPERFORMED many polls in 05, but I probably read dozens of posts a day how nothing matters because Diebold will steal it all.

Basically, I am interested in as much of your first hand experience as possible, since very few people here have your experience. If you have posted all of your thoughts before, let me know and I can go search your previous posts.

Thanks again.

5. My first hand experience
isn't much. I Just joined My county Dem group this past month or so. I really don't know what to make of the polls I did not follow them.

It was just the feel I got ..people did not seem real clear on the issues.

The republicans in my area ran a quiet phone campaign. They sure do love to work those phones. They where telling people these issues would cost ohio 90 mill...good old fashioned scare tactics. They said the far left liberals want to steal ohio elections...ect..

Some Dems and some papers did not support RON.

Arnold had one of issues on his ballot that scared more than a few people I talked to...People wanted to know why Arnold agreed...They where worried that in a rush to fix something we may actually be making it worse.

Other people where just confused about the issues and they had read what there was to be read. It was just to complicated..we need a KISS approach..KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID. The average joe does not hang out at DU ..while listening to air america and c span ..like many of us do..lol...They don't want to have to research an issue for a week to make up there mind.

anyway that is just my .02 on it all...I could be wrong..but even before the election I had a bad feeling RON was not to be this time around.

6. ""The average joe does not hang out at DU
..while listening to air america and c span"

This is an important point. I think that Democrats always need to think about how to get our message to connect with independents, disenchanted republicans, casual democrats, etc. It is one of the reasons I don't feel the need to refer to republicans as "pukes" or Bush as "chimp." While it may be fun, those kinds of insults do not win over the other side anymore that Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter win over our side.

We are at a point where we can lead many people over to our side, and it can be done by easing them over with facts and courtesy, not insults.

As for KISS, while I hope that our Democratic candidates can think deeply about issues, I also hope they can simplify their ideas so everyone can understand their perspective.

3. I agree
It didn't help that the Govenator had at the redistricting issue also..People had to wonder if a Republican wants it ...maybe it is not such a good idea.

idea what to make of it if they were even marginally aware of the issues. If you don't read a newspaper (declining circulation) or hang out on lefty web sites there is no way you would know about it without taking the time to research it. The high profile race was mayor and city council. That is what the 30-40% turnout went to the polls to vote on. Notice I said 30-40%. That is an awful lot of phone poll respondents who wouldn't even end up voting.

I thought 2 might pass just because people are lazy and most would want to mail in a ballot, rather then go to the polls on a possibly cold and or rainy day in November. The repugs claimed 2 would allow dems to vote twice.
