Map shows only two red states

Am I blue? Better believe it...

No more Jesusland...

Dreaminonempty, who has more than just the map at left, writes: "The Survey USA 50-state polling is out for November, as noted before, and it's not good news for Bush in more ways than one. His 'base' of strong support has dwindled to a grand total of two states. He is also losing ground among Republicans, notably in the South. And the number of respondents who are identified as Republican is decreasing. Will Bush ruin his own party?" (DailyKos)

2. I don't see how it's not "good news for Bush"
because I don't think he cares. He is spending his political capital, except his account is overdrawn. He doesn't care about the future of his party. Full speed ahead!

4. Jesusland
never really existed; it was more babble by the MSM. What we are seeing now is sensible folks expressing their opinion of an administration they have seen fail too many times...and they outnumber the zealots.

16. Try telling that to Southern bashers on this board
Edited on Wed Nov-23-05 03:37 PM by Clark2008
It makes no difference to them that 42 to 48 percent of the South DID NOT vote for Bush and that only the idiocy of the Electoral College makes it seem like the whole region is scarlett.

18. Yeah it does get a little old
after a while. Sometimes I think there is an element in the party who thinks if you have a tree in your yard you must have voted GOP!

13. I read some where that he like this....

Likes being the guy nobody likes but still gets his way. 'In control and don't care if you like it or not'.

I personally believe they hope to push this further to the point of civil unrest, blue vs red. 'godly vs heathens', 'patriots vs cowards', 'order vs counter culture'.

But so far that's just me thinking that.

11. Much of Texas is hurricane country.
We took in many Katrina victims & Rita took a big bite out of East Texas. We saw how the Feds handled both storms.

Some Texans are a bit slow, but they do catch on eventually.

10. A bit misleading
This map only shows approval/disapproval ratings of the president. It does not indicate that the people being polled are now going to vote Democratic. Although It would be my wet dream if that were an actual projected 2008 election map, it is simply foolish to believe that Democrats are making these huge inroads based on this map.

17. I'm from utah
what's funny about this, is it was the most solid red state in the union. So to me, the new mauve is still an improvement.

I'm not FROM utah, but i live here. And i have to say i was shocked at the polling numbers. Maybe it's a more suspicious younger demographic i'm hanging out with? (20's to early 30's).

I've found that the mormon church and culture really frowns on dissension. This is why they are losing so, SO many young people. However, fox news is a staple around here. Really, that we're not solidly red is a big step. I still think the election was stolen - even here. Based on the sheer number of people i know and the amount of kerry stickers i saw, please don't hate us Utahans - there's plenty of Dem's and/or free thinkers here.

22. What can we do to break the veneer in those three states? It matters.
I think it does matter. Your immune system can handle a little dispersed mold, but pile it up in one place and it becomes a toxic stronghold.
There has to be issues important to them, where they are in disagreement with Bush, that could use some somelight. What is the GOP vulnerability in these states?
I have a (very cool "black sheep") friend with family (Mormon) in Utah who talks about what it's like. Says that 1) their whole worldview is all wrapped up together in one knot, and they are incapable of adapting or accepting anything that threatens that worldview and that 2) at least a couple of them are heavily (and secretly) addicted to "painkillers". And 3) that some encourage their sons to join the army to go fight for the country.

Seems like those who are so afraid of a change in worldview definitely won't question it even if or after they tragically lose a kid in the war. They would be all the more dependent on it for protection.

They're so insulated.

Those painkillers sounded to me like some serious symptoms of 'cognitive dissonance'. A way to escape the claustrophobic box into which they've been constrained. So many "supposed to be's". The psyche wants some breathing room.

So politically speaking, how can we create cognitive dissonance, and a way out. A way for you to continue being 'you'.

24. I think ya need to count on their side...
The four states that are pink or mauve or whatever the heck that color is on the map. They show an approval rate over 50% and when you think about how badly Bush has fucked everything up, that means some pretty die-hard support. I live in KS, and while things are less red than they've probably ever been, they're a long way from falling into our column.

As someone pointed out up-thread, disapproval of Bush doesn't automatically translate into support for Dems. There has always been a tendancy by a lot of people to think all the Congress-critters are crooks, but to go ahead and vote for their own crook. You think that Repub in Alaska with his "bridge to nowhere" is going to suffer come re-election time?

Still, this is very good news; I only hope the party can capitalize on it. I know they're trying to. Pelosi, Reid, Dean, Clark and a whole bunch of others (Murtha too) are working very hard, and in close coordination, to turn it all around come next November. Our job is to support each other and not let the Repubs divide us.

"The American people will trust the Democratic Party to defend America when they believe that Democrats will defend other Democrats." -- Wes Clark

26. I'm not sure if Idaho or Utah is more red
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 03:03 PM by Hippo_Tron
It looks like Wyoming's libertarian population is starting to wake up and become anti Bush as his approval ratings drop into the low 50's, so that is putting the state out of the possibility of being the most red state (they also have a Dem Governor).

So that leaves Idaho and Utah.

As far as sheer percentages go, Bush broke 70% in Utah and not in Idaho. He did not in Idaho. However, Idaho is notorious for being a "one party state". Democrats don't seem to have much of a chance at ANYTHING there. Utah, on the other hand, at least has a dem congressman. Utah dems also ran a very good candidate in the Governors' race. I believe the race was only a few points difference.

At this point I'm gonna say that Idaho is probably the most red. What is everyone else's thoughts.

27. About the same
According to the survey, Bush has a positive 21% approval in Utah, in Idaho it is 20%. Statistically insignificant.

Edited on Sat Nov-26-05 09:21 AM by BlueIris
I had some good friends in Idaho once, and they SURE as hell didn't vote Republican. Yeah, that was in the '90s, and there are a lot of Mormons and other staunch conservatives in that place, but--what? It is SO red.
