Utahns Lash Out at Hatch
Utahns Lash Out at Hatch
by Mike Liddell
Wed Nov 23rd, 2005 at 11:13:39 AM EST

Senator Orrin Hatch may have shouted “Come on, America. Wake up! I’m sick of it,” on the Senate Floor, but it was Hatch who received a wake up call from his constituents. In a one-two punch, two letters to the editors were printed in the Salt Lake Tribune on Tuesday coming down on Hatch for not caring “as much about his constituents as he does about big oil companies.” And just to prove that Hatch isn’t doing so well, a recent Deseret Morning News and KSL-TV poll found that only 45% of Utahns would like to see him re-elected and 48% want someone new.

“I was quite upset when reading his statement to his fellow party members. This article shows that U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch has collected $97,500 in campaign contribution from oil and gas companies since 1999,” Kami Lambson wrote.

“Oil from shale would be one of the most environmentally damaging sources of energy. Yet Sen. Hatch says ‘left-wing extremists are keeping us from developing our own resources in an environmentally friendly way.’ Instead of calling names, Sen. Hatch should have consulted with those working on renewable and environmentally sound sources of energy such as solar, biofuels and fuel from waste,” Susan Way wrote.

“I hope that Sen. Hatch will stand up for the most vulnerable citizens, and not support the bill passed by the House of Representatives to cut spending for social services, health and education,” Way continued.

1. Maybe Harry Reid has a brother in Utah?
Wishful thinking, I know, but maybe there's a Democrat there who can have a broad appeal to Utahns

10. Use "unicode" encoding
If you're using IE, go to View/Encoding then choose Unicode (UTF-8).

4. Upsurge of liberalism in Utah?
There have been a few stories like these lately, including a very outspoken Mayor in SLC that came out against Bush a few months ago.

Kind of surprising I guess...

8. All big cities become more liberal
even SLC. Utah itself is still solidly red. Perhaps we could see more independents come out of Utah, though?

5. Holy shit. Hatch is vulnerable. GO FOR IT.
We are suicidally insane if we don't fight him for that seat.

He has seniority out the wazoo. Mamma! We could break their whole committee system.

At the very least we can force the Republicans to commit huge amounts to defend a seat they used to take as a gift.

Is he up in 2006? Who have we got?

7. It is really bad when an incubent gets less than 50%...
Very vulnerable. Hatch can expect that the Democrats will get someone really lame to oppose him, as usual.

11. My opinion of Hatch went to zero when I called his office....
...about Social Security to express frustration with 'puke policies, and when I said to one of his aides "What are you going to do next, execute the poor and disabled?" and she said "I'd press the button."

Pfft, right then my opinion went to zero. If he keeps and encourages aides like that, then he doesn't need to be in office. End of story.

15. Oh, yes. She did. I wrote Hatch's Washington office about it...
...and about 3 months later I received some reply from him - but I was still so upset that I threw his letter in the trash without even reading it.

They are some COLD SOBs, let me tell you. When I say 'pukes are like Nazis, I'm not lying. If they thought they could get away with lining up the poor and disabled for the gas chamber, they'd be doing it. It's only good folks like those at DU that keep these total whack jobs from indulging their true nature.

I'm a FORMER Republican for a reason.

13. If Hatch can be beaten
Anyone can. I get the feeling that my congress critter is nervous. Peter King (R-NY3). He's going some Q&A session and sent out a glossy newsletter without a picture of him kissing Bush's ass. Very unusual.
