The only arguement that pukies seem to make to those who criticize Iraq
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 08:20 AM by rpannier
Is to question their patriotism. They make no arguement in favor of staying the course other than "It would be a disaster if we left." They don't seem to be able to point to what we've accomplished, or are accomplishing in Iraq. They just recycle 60's propaganda.
It always seems to come down to how we hate America -- they will say the same things about Murtha.
What offends me the most is that I served and many of these critics never have served. As a note: I do find it interesting that when I have lunch with my Army friends here in Seoul (I live in Korea) none of them ever question my Patriotism. Maybe those who REALLY served, or are serving don't feel the need to lower themselves to question one's patriotism.

1. Tolstoy on patriotism (just came across this again a few minutes ago)
"Patriotism in its simplest, clearest, and most indubitable signification is nothing else but a means of obtaining for the rulers their ambitions and covetous desires, and for the ruled the abdication of human dignity, reason, and conscience, and a slavish enthralment to those in power. And as such it is recommended wherever it is preached. Patriotism is slavery." (Tolstoy, Writings On Civil Disobedience and Non-Violence, New Society, 1987, p.103)

2. Every time one of these assholes (and that includes some
Democrats, too) say "It would be a disaster if we just pulled out!" I say, "Aren't you the assholes who said this war would be a "cakewalk"? Didn't I hear you guys telling everyone that we'd have flowers and candy thrown at us? You haven't been right about one thing since this cluster-fuck started, but NOW you KNOW that it would be a disaster if we left? With your track record, I'll vote for "cut and run" - it's bound to be the best move, simply because you oppose it!"

3. My response: It's already a mess, and it's going to be a mess
whether we stay or go. What is now a low-intensity civil war will, most likely, erupt into a full-scale bloodbath whenEVER we leave--now, or ten years from now. Then I remind them that there are two reasons it's a mess: first, Bushco completely misunderstood (and misrepresented) the situation in Iraq before the invasion; and second, they failed miserably at managing the occupation, providing security for the Iraqi people, rebuilding the country and suppressing the insurgency. ALL they have to show for the invasion of Iraq (aside from 2,100 dead Americans, tens of thousands of dead Iraqis, and a 250 billion dollar tab) is a written constitution that calls for the breakup of the country, the disenfranchisement of the Sunnis, and the suppression of women's rights. Way to git 'er done, W!
