Proposed porn tax creates dilemma for some anti-tax conservatives
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- A proposal to impose a special tax on sexually oriented businesses is creating a dilemma for some legislators.

They're socially conservative and would like to combat pornography and discourage the opening of new shops that sell X-rated videos and magazines and other products, such as sex toys.

But some also have signed a pledge not to raise taxes.

.......

Among them is Sen. Kay O'Connor, R-Olathe, who told the Lawrence Journal-World she would like to support a tax on sexually oriented businesses because, "We shouldn't make life too terribly easy for them."

But, she added, "A pure tax increase, I would have to vote no."

18. They are talking about this across the state line in MO too
So I would imagine they could have just borrowed the idea.

But hey, we DO have SOME smart politicians in Kansas. :)

9. "We shouldn't make life too terribly easy for them."
Oh yeah, making a living in adult entertainment is SO easy with Alberto Gonzales and his "War On Porn"; George Bush's "Pornography Awareness Month" (every October); the FBI agents assigned to full-time investigation of "obscenity" in adult movies; and in most cities and towns, the vilification of any business associated with sex.

Spare me. It's just another reason to get the hell out of this country.

13. If it's a net decrease in overall taxes, I don't see how it's a tax hike
WTF?

so in this dimwit's mind (Karl Peterjohn) if the state imposed a 100% tax on one product but cut an equal amount on a different product, there would be no tax hike?

I don't quite understand this

19. they restrict porn, which in turn causes people to seek out unsafe sex,
which in turn spreads disease and misery and costs the taxpayers billions.

when will these idiots learn? never?

the so-called "conservatives" never look at life realistically, but only through that peculiar republican-colored lens that imagines every adult to be married with children. what a bunch of idiots... and meanwhile, they're the first ones to get divorced and end up alone.

i'm glad they're suffering with this dilemma. the reason they hate it so much is that it makes them have to analyze something related to sexuality... at some point they may come to painful realizations about themselves and their own stupid views along the way!

It is a tax based on the CONTENT of speech, even a court full of Scalia's would strike down these laws.
