Pelosi just endorsed Murtha's bill to remove US troops from Iraq
Edited on Wed Nov-30-05 06:42 PM by welshTerrier2
while i'm not aware of any Senate Dems coming out in favor of Murtha's bill, such is not the case in the House ...

Pelosi said she believes a majority of House Dems support Murtha's bill ... it's nice to see that there's support for the bill beyond DU's "radical lefty freeper fringe" ...

once again, Senator Kerry "distanced himself" from Murtha's plan ... still, Kerry supporters want us to believe there's very little difference between the plans ... yeah, right ...

House of Representatives Minority leader Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday backed a call by Democratic Rep. John Murtha to quickly start the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, and said she believed a majority of her caucus supported it as well.

"I will be supporting the Murtha resolution," Pelosi said of his plan calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq at the earliest practicable date.

Pelosi, a California congresswoman who had opposed the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, said she believed a majority of House Democrats "clearly supports Mr. Murtha."
But she said was speaking for herself and would not press for a united Democratic position on the issue.

A number of other Senate Democrats also have distanced themselves from Murtha's stance, saying the draw-down of U.S. troops should hinge on conditions on the ground in Iraq.

"Jack and I and others believe that you need to approach it in the way that we've set out, where you have certain measurements for that success over a period of time," Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts said
at a news conference with fellow Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island.

2. no, i wouldn't ...
i think the term is absurd ... it's been used repeatedly by some Kerry supporters on DU about those critical of Senator Kerry or his positions ...

i used the term sarcastically ... there are elements of Murtha's position i don't like but i'll go along with just about any plan that gets us out of Iraq as fast as troop safety allows ...

3. REPORTER described it as distancing and ignored "sharing common goals"

with Murtha's plan that Kerry actually talked about when he referred to Murtha's plan.

You KNOW Kerry said it as it was in the real time thread, so why did you side with the reporter's spin?

And why the constant attack on Kerry and his plan when even Tom Hayden said it's the most detailed and doable? Not to mention the constant attack on his supporters.

It just seems so out of proportion, especially since Kerry was the first lawmaker to even submit a withdrawal plan, set himself up to defend Murtha from swiftboating, and has stayed on both Bush and McCain with no let up.

Kerry and Murtha together changed the debate to one of WITHDRAWAL and instead you keep pretending somehow that it's Murtha VERSUS Kerry instead of Kerry and Murtha's withdrawal plans versus Bush's course for war.

4. kick ... this is very big
to the have Pelosi get behind the plan and to have her suggest a majority in the House get behind it leaves the Senate Dems out in the cold ...

the "compromise position", should the Dems seek to negotiate a common position, will not be based solely on a timeframe ... the essential difference between what is coming out of the House (i.e. Murtha and McGovern) versus the DOA Senate plans is the issue of contingency and linkage ...

the House arguments believe each day we remain in Iraq is making things worse ... the Senate plans continue to push for some form of "success" in Iraq ... one says we can't stay because our presence in making things worse; the other says we can't leave until we make things better ... that's a HUGE difference ...

the tide is with the House, not the Senate ... nothing coming out of the Senate drew national attention like Murtha's plan ... the American people are DONE WITH IRAQ ... they don't want to hear about "solutions" a year down the road; the want this madness over and done with ... the Senate Dems will come around sooner or later; let's hope it's sooner ... it's time for all Dems to jump on the "enough is enough" bandwagon ... bush is dangerous; we shouldn't be giving him more time in Iraq ... we may not have control and we may not have the votes, but a bold position like the one Murtha has will rally the American people and send the republicans running into the night like the chicken hawks they are ...
