Can a campaign have an auction or a raffle for fund raising?
I really need to bone up on campaign fund raising law. I just thought I'd be lazy and ask the question for now.

Open Secrets. org has the complicated explanation to review and I will do that, but at the moment, lets talk about ways to raise money for candidates which is LEGAL.

1. Well, the Democrats did have their national telethon...
...but that was back in the 1970's.

2. 'Legal' for Democrats ...
... or 'legal' for Republicans? They seem to be two different things these days.

3. I don't seer why not, but you would have to track where the
stuff came from that you are going to auction. I would think the value of those items would have to be considered donated funds. As far as running the auction, that time could be considered as volunteering.

4. All the items will be donated.
I guess the items need to be less than $2,000 in value to be safe and the individual would probably be maxed out at that point...to be safe...but I'm not sure.

6. That's my understanding too.
The problem I see right now is in the bidding. If someone donated a $2,000 painting, would that mean the donor would be prohibited from bidding on anything else? I think you need a little legal help with this one.

9. I'm thinking of a raffle.....
Sell tickets for $100.00. The prize would be $100.00 a week for a year. Is that legal? I would need to sell 52 tickets at the cost of $5.200 plus printing.

Now, add to that if the candidate wins, they get double! The drawing will be the night of election after the polls close. That would encourage voters to get out and vote.

5. Raffles are regulated by state laws as "gambling" in many states
so you probably would not want to go there.

7. yes
the tickets are purchased as donations. An auction couldn't go over the limits for the cycle.

13. It's better to be safe than sorry...
It is spelled out in detail....

You can, however, have theme based fund raisers....

I always thought they were more fun to attract people who normally might not attend....

But with your normal donation crowd.... Just get a good list and work it....
