An Economy Driven By Debt

Don't Confuse the Jobs Hype with the Facts

Paul Craig Roberts, CounterPunch

The November payrolls job report was announced Friday with the usual misleading hype. Spinmeisters made the most out of the 215,000 jobs. Looking beyond the glitter at the real facts, this is what we see. 21,000 of those jobs were government jobs supported by taxpayers. There were only 194,000 new jobs in the private sector.

Of those new jobs, 37,000 are in construction and only 11,000 are in manufacturing. The bulk of the new jobs--144,000--are in domestic services.

Wholesale and retail trade account for 20,000(Wal-Mart type) Food services and drinking places (waitresses and bar tenders) account for 38,000.(fast food)

Health care and social assistance account for 27,000. Professional and business services account for 29,000. Financial activities gained 13,000 jobs. Transportation and warehousing gained 8,000 jobsfew of these jobs result in tradable services that can be exported or help to close the growing gap in the US balance of trade.>>>snip

1. 21K gubmint jobs??? What ever happened to drowning the federal
government in Grover's bathtub?

I find it ironic that the only president to REALLY cut down the bloated government, in a measured, reasonable way, was Clinton the Democrat. All of his efforts have been reversed by these idiots....

And "servitude" jobs are good news? Great, now Americans can compete with undocumented workers for that minimum wage employment! Who will work for peanuts, let the bidding begin! And forget about health care--we may give you an aspirin and a pack of bandaids in the break room, but you'll have to chip in to have those comforts available!

2. The author
served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration

He goes on to say:

Average hourly earnings (up 3.2 percent over the last year) are not keeping up with the consumer price index (up 4.3 percent).
Consequently, real incomes are falling.

Populations are hard pressed when the prices of goods rise relative to the price of labor, because this makes it impossible for the population to maintain its standard of living.

The US economy has been kept alive by low interest rates, which fueled a real estate boom. Consumers have kept growth alive by refinancing their home mortgages and spending the equity in their houses. Their indebtedness has risen.

3. Break room? How quaint
We pay you to WORK for your entire 12 hour shift, not to be loafing in some breakroom. Just be glad you have a job and get enough hours in feed your family.

4. Enough hours are not the real record, they have, in fact, fallen
Despite the gain in jobs, total hours worked declined as the average workweek fell to 33.7 hours. (from the statistics)

The decline in the labor force participation rate, a consequence of the shrinkage in well-paying jobs, masks a higher rate of unemployment than the reported 5 percent. The ratio of employment to population fell again in November.

5. Reflecting the seasonal part timers?
I had understood people were working more in the US than ever. They game these numbers so much...

6. What is a "domestic services" job?
To me it means housekeeper or maid which I'm sure it's not in this case.

7. I guess.
In other words, "trickle down" jobs. Phooey!

I wonder, though, if those numbers can be backed up. You know what the first thing that will come from people's mouths when you show them this. "Oh, that's some lefty egghead publication, spinning the numbers!" It's a damn shame the MSM won't pick up on this.

9. It is an economic term used "domestic goods and services"
Service jobs are support jobs that provide work done for a customer other than manufacturing which include medical, retail, shipping, food service, financial etc. vs domestic goods as in manufacturing where something is made.

8. In all honesty, 21,000 is about 10% which is about the correct share for
the government if you include state and local governments in calculating the government's share of employment.
