A Sex Scandal in Washington about to break?

Are things in DC really this bad?
by kos

It sounds like some of that irresponsible blogger speculations we keep hearing about, except it's coming from the National Journal's blog. And the National Journal is the most respected political publication in DC.

DC Sex Scandal About To Break?

Sometimes we read too many political clips and overlook some amazing things staring us in the face. Among those in Monday's edition, this little factoid, culled from Sunday's San Diego Union-Tribune blockbuster digging deeper into the Duke Cunningham's relationship with "co-conspirator No. 1," a.k.a. lobbyist Brent Wilkes.

According to the U-T, Wilkes also "ran a hospitality suite, with several bedrooms, in" DC -- "first in the Watergate Hotel and then" in a Capitol Hill hotel.

Come again? A "hospitality suite with several bedrooms"?

Talk about raising more questions, including:

-- Why does a lobbyist need a "hospitality suite with several bedrooms"?
-- Who uses those bedrooms and for what?

Can things be so bad in DC that lobbysts are running a prostitution ring, providing service for votes?

While I don't doubt some sleazy lobbysts would consider such a thing, I can't imagine any elected officials so stupid as to avail themselves of such services. This seems insanely improbable. Tinfoil hat territory.

But first, it does demand an answer -- what exactly were those hospitality suites for?

--------------------------------------------------
This is pretty fascinating....add to this the story on Cannonfire about MZM's front for getting defense money into the hands of Republicans, this guy Wilkes is going to give Abramoff a run for his money.

But this prostitution thing....hmmm. Another honeypot? Can extortion/blackmail be far behind? Should would explain a lot.

56. The Washington Blade claimes Cunningham is Gay. So the rooms
could have been used for either hetero or homo sexual favors. That's where Jeff Gannon could fit it. He maybe moved in those circles and that's how he got his job with the Bushies. Now if Ralph Reed was using those rooms we've got a scandal that will blow whatever Clinton did off the Radar. (no pun intended) Could be the biggest sex and bribery scandal ever to hit DC.

Or do you really believe a "hospitality suite" of rooms is for the benefit of politicians who just need to "lie down" after over-indulging in food and drink?

But, one thing this hospitality suite offers is no traceability. No rented rooms or pesky press to snap an undersired pic. I can see where this might be quite a popular place. And what a way to get the goods on people that might otherwise be reluctant to play along.

That's what I've always heard and I thought it was a myth! I will be a little more believing to those stories of loose women in DC now:) I hear it is a party town and you can get anything you want in the way of drugs or sex... and the extreme in both cases. My info came from a couple of guys in punk bands and I thought maybe there was some braggadocio involved, but if confirmed by a dc firefighter, well, now, there you have it!

it's, as Kissinger said, the ultimate aphrodisiac if you care to use it in that fashion. But partners who are trying to sleep "up", so to speak, aren't necessarily going to react the same way to the average punk band member. So you're right to be skeptical of the braggadocio!

ran a Cunningham story today -similar, if not identical - to the Cannonfire piece. It mentioned that the 'largesse' - the antiques, etc.- might have been Cunningham's attempt to re-woo his wife. They are currently separated it said.

32. Maybe I'm just a total cynic...
...but when I see a story slowly "break" like this--I think that BushCo is up to something again.

It's obvious to me that our entire political system is held together by blackmail. They all have dirt on each other. They all know that if they step too far out of line--the dirt is revealed.

There is so much corruption, evil and anti-American BS going on--in both camps. The only way this stuff is kept in check, is by the dirt they all have on one another.

If a scandal is about to break--it's because someone wants it to break. Maybe Reps and Dems are about to be punished for anti-Bush actions? Maybe this initial vague story is a warning sign to all--to STFU--or the video and hooker witnesses will be unleashed.

I noticed that it only took a few days for them to do a number on Bill Clinton. After he eloquently spoke out against Katrina, and met one-on-one with Katrina victims (making Junior look like an ass clown), two Clinton scandal girls surfaced and set up camp at the Clinton library.

These evil sociopaths have packaged scandals waiting in the wings. If someone crosses the line--the publicity campaign is released and the dirt is spilled around.

Also--scandals like this are a nice distraction from the hell in Iraq. We can't make the public like our lovely and exiting war? Ok...I guess we'll have to make them forget about it them---bring in the hookers!!

33. LA Times article
Cunningham's Fall From Grace, Power

Others believe that the years Cunningham spent in Washington while his wife, Nancy, worked as a school district administrator in Encinitas, north of San Diego — as well as rumors that swirled around the boisterous parties on the Duke-Stir — strained his marriage, and that the lavishly furnished mansion represented an effort to make things up to his wife. (The couple are now estranged.)

It was also in the late 1990s that Cunningham met Wade, who had worked in the Pentagon and was in the Navy Reserve. The two became close. Wade, Cunningham told friends, "is the younger brother I never had."

The operative theory among some of Cunningham's supporters is that the contractors played on Cunningham's years of public service, suggesting he had earned the kind of luxuries he could not afford on his own.

Rep. Jack Kingston of Georgia, vice chairman of the House Republican Conference, who served on the House defense appropriations subcommittee with Cunningham, said, "I think what happened in this situation is that you develop friendships, and those friends see you after hours, on the weekends, and they have nice play toys — boats, access to golfing, country clubs, credit cards — and you're becoming friends with the guy and you don't think that much of it, and before you know it you get caught up in it."

34. US: Defense Contractor 'Knew How to Grease the Wheels'
ADCS founder spent years cultivating political contacts.

by By Dean Calbreath and Jerry Kammer, San Diego Union-Tribune
December 4th, 2005

Wilkes befriended other legislators, too. He ran a hospitality suite, with several bedrooms, in Washington – first in the Watergate Hotel and then in the Westin Grand near Capitol Hill.

He also kept his donations flowing, targeting people with clout over the Pentagon budget: $43,000 to Jerry Lewis, who now heads the Appropriations Committee; $35,500 to Hunter, who heads the Armed Services Committee; and $30,000 to Tom DeLay, who flew on Wilkes' jet several times and has been a frequent golfing buddy.

Over the past three years, Wilkes' lobbying group in Washington – Group W Advisors – also paid about $630,000 in lobbying fees to Alexander Strategy Group, a firm headed by DeLay's former chief of staff Ed Buckham and staffed with former DeLay employees.

63. Update from Josh Marshall
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 01:44 PM by kpete
(December 06, 2005 -- 12:54 PM EST // link)
Let me follow up on the post below about those "hospitality suite with several bedrooms" that arch-contracts-hustler Brent Wilkes was running around downtown Washington. I probably should have been a bit more explicit about this last evening but the wording the reporters for the Union-Tribune used was almost certainly code for some sort of legislative love shack Wilkes used to lubricate the pay-for-play operation that made him and his pals so much cash before Duke brought the whole movable feast down on their heads. It may match up with reports about fast times down at the marina on the various Dukeboats.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/

P.S. I don't know how to explain the cross out. Did not appear on Josh Marshall's blog.
