What would the penalty be? A Fine, Federal penitentiary or Firing squad,
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 03:12 PM by LaPera
(or all three), for the burning of a Flag?

How often does that come up, someone burning a flag?

Suppose it's an obsolete flag with 48 stars on it?

Or a flag missing all the stripes, and just the stars? Can you burn just some stripes? Can one burn a state flag, how about the Confederate flag?

If no on sees you burning a flag and they find a partially burned flag in your trash, (even if someone else might have put it there) what happens?

This is a bullshit non-issue the republicans throw out at Dem's every year, to see which ones are weak and will cave in!!!

Complete bullshit!

The flag is a piece of material, a symbol, and if any symbol at all, it's to express one's first amendment right to freedom of speech, and to be free enough to burn a flag, if one chooses...

For over 230 years Americans have always had that right (and until only recently, this fascism testing of loyalty, has never come up), and now this fascist dictatorship is doing the Jerry Falwell and the right-wing ideology dance, combining the flag, with God (and Jesus) and patriotism, all in one neat & tidy little oppressive package...making it a test of ones loyalty.

What gives them the right to question, and so what if you have a different opinion from others?

They have nothing better to do than point fingers?

They are trying desperately to shatter & crush any past thoughts of "Question Authority" or that, "Dissent is Patriotic" in future generations...

"Conformity" is what they are trying to achieve… to produce corporate robot workers, who just accept whatever they are given by the corporations, and good little Christian soldiers, who ask no questions, and go off to war to die for Jesus and the flag.

1. This whole thing reminds me of the dangerous combination....
of "God, Guns, and Country". It's that same trio that got Europe into war after war after war. The combonation of "God, Guns, and Country" has nothing to do with patriotism, it's jingoism of the worse kind. Ignorant, just as the Boy Scouts are.

3. We burn flags every year at the VFW
If they pass this law what will happen there? It is the accepted way to get rid of old worn out flags. This is such a non-issue I don't understand why they keep wasting our time with it. Why don't these assholes concentrate on the real ills of society in this country instead of running around in circles about flag burners.

5. which makes it a thought crime . . .
whether you're violating the law or not depends on what you're THINKING while you're burning the flag . . .

you're an American Legion officer who's thinking patriotic thoughts while burning a flag? . . . that's okay . . .

you're a protester thinking about the illegal war in Iraq while burning the flag? . . . that's a crime . . .

ridiculous . . .

4. MEANWHILE, isn't there something worth worrying over happening
You now like the Abramhof scandal?
Or maybe a corrupt civilian leadership guiding the Pentagon?
Or one freakin huge national deficit?

Too bad they already got baseball steroids out of the docket.

6. That stuff needs to be put into proper perspective
Right now, Congress must address the pressing issue of the NCAA Bowl Championship selection system. I for one have lost a lot of sleep over whether the football ratings were overly confusing. Thank Gawd for Joe Barton!

7. Words fail me ! Are you saying that Congress is actually
getting involved in something like this?

Why?

What on earth does this have to do with the US government?

10. It doesn't have anything to do with it!
But it keeps them from having to address issues that matter to the People. Here's a link: BCS "deeply flawed".

9. My mother tells me
that in WWI Austria, it was considered patriotic to buy handkerchiefs with emperor Franz Josef II's face embroidered on them. You would blow your nose literally into the emperor's face.

12. It's such a bogus issue for so many reasons.
Do we really need one more reason for police to beat up protestors?

Is this really a problem in America?

I'd love to see the definition of the US flag, because if the object doesn't fit the legal description, ain't no crime!! Let's say it has 49 stars, or one less stripe, or the wrong dimensions.

And why isn't it desecration to fly a plastic one out your car window?
