"Joe Lieberman: Republican Posterboy"
Joe Lieberman: Republican Posterboy
Out with Rumsfeld, in with the senator from Connecticut?

by James Ridgeway
December 9th, 2005 5:28 PM

Washington, D.C.—If Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld retires and gets replaced by Democratic senator Joe Lieberman—the hot speculation here this week—what would America get out of the deal? Well, another hawk who never went to war, for one thing.
And what would President Bush get? A wedge to keep the Democrats from uniting behind Representative John Murtha against the war in Iraq. Here's a look at Lieberman, Republican posterboy:

Nickname: The Senator

A/K/A: "Trent Lott and Tom DeLay's favorite Democrat,"—Lott spokesman to John Czwartacki

1. Why would that split the rank and file?
I don't think he has that much support amongst ordinary people.

The split will be amongst our "leaders" who have to save face and proove to one another that they won't just pitch each other over the side whenever challenged. I say they should get over it.

4. The bush admin wouldn't let Lieberman get anywhere near
the Pentagon. Far too much graft; too much active borderline illegal activity (ala the former Fieth policy group; the media as propoganda but only propogandizing foreign media *wink, wink*) The quickest way to get the bushco highest profile dem ally on the iraq war, to turn on em faster than a rattlesnake - is to let him get into the mix of the current Pentagon. They won't put anyone in that position who can not be controlled, or does not need to be controlled because the practices that are vogue in the rummy era pentagon are deemed legitimate and valuable. The senator may be many things that anger me... but I don't think he is "controllable" by the WH.

Speculating per what he is doing with his current rhetoric - legitimate. Speculating about his being picked by Bushco to run the Pentagon... laughable as it is highly, highly unlikely to happen.

5. A 'wedge'?

"And what would President Bush get? A wedge to keep the Democrats from uniting behind Representative John Murtha against the war in Iraq."

Is it just me, or does this statement seem a bit naive? Lieberman has managed to alieniate himself from his fellow Democrats, especially his own constituents. IMHO, were he to take Rummy's job, or any other position that puts him squarely in the Repub camp, I don't see a lot of people clamoring to stand with him.

Lieberman has already placed himself in a very lonely position; the only 'wedge' I can foresee would be a further widening of the disconnect that already exists between Lieberman and his party.

11. Not only that....
There's no sign Democrats are "uniting behind Murtha"...everything being said by everyone from Pelosi to Dean to Kerry to Reid signals a coalition agreement being drawn up by most of the caucus about what is to be done...and I doubt even Mrs. Murtha thinks Murtha is going to be leading the charge when all is said and done on that front.

By the way, it's hilarious to see the leftists deriding Lieberman as a "Republican lite" and the like cheer for "progressive" John Murtha (compare the records of the two on, say, reproductive choice, or the environment, or prescription drug coverage under Medicare, or school prayer).

Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 01:00 PM by Skip Intro
I wondered this abut zell, back when he was blowing bush at the repuke hatefest.

Is there a mechanism by which joe could be expelled from the party?

9. He wouldn't go
too many areas in which he has big disagreements with the repubs - sorta like McCain - he will diss some repubs - and at times go toe to toe with the WH (ala cheney and torture) - but in the end - he will vote repub - because on too many issues he really agrees with the repub line. Likewise with Lieberman, but sans the cult of personality.

12. An SoD with a voice like Lieberman's would only encourage the enemy.
Sounds like Willy Tanner from the show "ALF."

Aside from Iraq, I'm sure there's a lot more common ground between myself and Lieberman, than with his latest fans, but I do wonder how he feels about his praise from the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity and other swill-spewers on the Right.
