06 campaign just got a little uglier. Ehrlich hires Cleland swift-boater.
From the Baltimore Sun:

In the first major step toward building a campaign team, Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. has hired a political director whose major credit is the successful race he ran to unseat a former Georgia senator and crusading war veteran that has Democrats there still crying foul four years later.

Bo Harmon, a veteran of the National Republican Congressional Committee and other GOP organizations, as well as manager of Saxby Chambliss' campaign against then-Sen. Max Cleland, said yesterday that he is coming to Maryland to get the word out about Ehrlich's accomplishments.

Democrats here and in Georgia immediately criticized the hire, saying Ehrlich is bringing to Maryland a virtuoso of nastiness who attacked the patriotism of Cleland, an Army veteran who lost three limbs in Vietnam.

"Bo Harmon ran one of the most despicable campaigns in the history of Georgia, if not the nation," Georgia Democratic Party Chairman Bobby Kahn said in a statement.

"Senator Chambliss' campaign was the worst example of the politics of personal destruction, defaming the character of a man who gave up so much for his country in Vietnam," Kahn added. "If Bo Harmon was willing to do that in 2002 against an American war hero like Max Cleland, one can only imagine what he is likely to do in 2006."

Those of you familiar with the '02 Cleland vs Chambliss race... Could you fill me in on how nasty the campaign really was? What can we expect here in Maryland '06?

1. Well, it ain't gonna work...
Throughout the entire state, no one, and I mean no one I've met in my daily travels is going to vote for Ehrlich. And that includes plenty of Republican voters.

Everyone and I stress, EVERYONE I've met, whether it's in a grocery or retail store line, neighbors and sales folks, to people at gas stations and everyone in between (strangers, many of them) and throw in people I know from every imaginable walk-of-life, age-group, you name it are fed-up with him.

He could hire the Queen of England, and it isn't going to help him.

The majority are voting for O'Malley, hands-down. I don't care what any poll shows, or otherwise.

Buh-bye, Ehrlich. Hope the door hits ya on the way out, you heartless, money-grubbin' ba$tard!

Its pretty much a 50/50 split with almost every Republican siding with Ehrlich. A few 'Ehrlich Democrats' from '02 are claming they will vote for him again in '06. But for the most democrats support O'Malley. Ehrlich's popularity in my area probably stems from the fact that he represented my area in congress for a several years.

Ehrlich's popularity among moderate democrats and indy's is eroding, which will make it much more difficult for him to win re-election. Just a couple months ago he had a 60% approval among indy's. He's now down to 45%. With his statewide approval at 47%.
