It's the Republicans who have no plan
One common criticism that Republicans have for anyone who stands in the political sphere to the left of them, be it Democrats, independents, or otherwise, is that we don't have a plan to deal with this nation's problems. In the Republican's minds, having nothing better to do and wanting to cause trouble are the reasons why the Left is opposed to them. It's difficult to say exactly when this “no plan” talking point was birthed, but there's no question that the argument is part of today's political debates. And while it may reflect some truth, it's very misleading because it insinuates that the Republicans must be the party which has a plan – but they don't. On issues like abortion, the economy, and the War in Iraq, Republicans have proven time and time again that they have hordes of ideas, but they don't have a plan to handle the consequences of their actions.

Let's start with abortion. The 2004 Republican Party Platform calls not only for judges who are against abortion to be nominated to the federal bench, but it even calls for a Constitutional amendment to ban abortion. There's no question that they want to make illegal almost any abortion performed in the United States, but how do they propose to handle societal problems caused by a post-legal abortion America? The answer is that they don't. They don't even predict that the lack of obtaining a safe and legal abortion will cause any problems, as evidenced by the fact that they're 2004 Platform makes no mention of how to handle the increased number of unwanted pregnancies in America; also, their Platform neglects to mention a plan to handle medical emergencies caused by illegal abortions. They seemingly think that sweeping a problem under the rug will make it go away, but you can never whisk away a procedure that has been in existence for hundreds of years. Abortion fits this mold. Bartolome de las Casas, a priest who traveled to the Americas with Christopher Columbus, notes in The History of The Indies that abortions were practiced by the Arawaks living on Hispaniola in the 1500's: “If tire of their men, they give themselves abortions with herbs that force stillbirths.” Here we have proof that abortion was practiced over 500 years ago. The more recent history of abortion led to a fight to make sure it's legalized in this country specifically because women were endangering themselves by undergoing illegal abortion procedures; hence, problems that would be caused by a post-legal abortion America. So while Republicans argue that abortion is immoral and should be outlawed, they have yet to detail a plan to deal with the consequences of making it illegal.

Since the Republicans have not succeeded in making abortion illegal, the country has not been forced to live through the problems that their lack of planning would have created. Unfortunately, this scenario is not true when other situations are taken into account; where Republican reforms have succeeded. For instance, let's have a look at President George W. Bush's tax cuts and how they have effected our economy.

One of President Bush's first actions, after assuming the office of the Presidency, was enforcing his tax cut plan on the nation. We were told that taxes should be cut because the United States' budget was flush with billions in surplus cash. So, despite the fact that bridges and roads are still not in perfect shape, and the conditions of some American public schools are deplorable, Bush and the Republicans deemed that cutting a $300 check to middle class Americans was the best use of the government's surplus money. The rich, of course, got more than that – but that's no surprise.
