Washington Examiner: Poll Has Warner Flying High
71 percent of Va. voters approve of performance
By Samson Habte
Examiner Staff Writer

Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, who was in Florida this weekend wrapping up a week of out-of-state travel that political observers interpreted as presidential water-testing, continues to earn high approval ratings back home, according to a new poll.

In a recently released telephone survey of 500 likely voters, 71 percent of Virginia respondents said they approved of the job being done by Warner, a Democrat set to leave office in January.

The poll, conducted by Rasmussen Reports, also asked respondents to weigh in on a hypothetical 2008 presidential contest between Warner and Sen. George Allen, a popular Virginia Republican.

Warner leads Allen 49 percent to 44 percent in the head-to-head match-up. The poll had a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points.

<snip>

Eddie Ratliff, a grassroots activist from Salem, Va., who launched a "Draft Warner" Web site in November 2004, told The Examiner that "there is no other Democratic candidate out there with ability to appeal" to Southern voters, who traditionally support the GOP.

Poll results

Should Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, D, run for president?

Yes: 41 percent

No: 38 percent

Should Virginia Sen. George Allen, R, run for president?

Yes: 38 percent

No: 46 percent

1. Excuse me, but who really cares much about how he is polling in
VA. Are you trying to confuse people and make them think this is a nation wide poll he is doing well in?

5. Is there a poll that shows him leading there? Nope... he was well
received and that's great... nothing to write home about at such an early stage.

2. He's definitely gearing up for something..
He's hired Jerome Armstong (formerly from the Dean camp) to run his internet functions, and Monica Dixon (former chief of staff for Al Gore) as part of his PAC...

Bernie Quigley is even writing about him..

13. He's going to have some great people running his campaign!

Kerry made mistakes with who he hired so hopefully Mark learned from him. Sounds like it with Dean and Gore people. And around Thanksgiving he met secretly with Clinton (Bill that is and I read that at the Kerry forum I believe). I think he's going to be the DLC backer this next election cycle and I just don't think Hillary is going to run.

15. I don't think she will either...

And only for one reason.. On one of the appearances the Big Dawg made on Larry King, King said to him in that gravely voice..

"According to polls, Hillary consistently comes out on top.. when can we expect her to announce?"

Big Dawg just shook his head laughing and replied "You know Larry, all that's up to her.. but wouldn't Karl Rove just love that one?"

Unfortunately they moved on to another topic or a commercial or something.. But since then, I've wondered if she keeps the "will she or won't she mystery" in the news for PR reasons?

My prediction is that Jeanine Pirro will drop out in order for Guilliani to run against Hillary. Guilliani knows damn well that he has a better chance of being elected to the senate than he does of being the Republican nominee. Like they suggested on Chris Matthews today, Republicans love his instant fame -- but they could never nominate a pro-choice candidate.

I almost bought the media b.s. about her running until I heard Big Dawg say how much Rove would love it. I'll bet she makes her pledge to never run for president just as the U.S. senate race heats up.

The Clinton's are up to something.. but I agree with you.. it's not Hillary's presidential plans. Just a hunch.

4. This is the same old Virginia poll that has been reported a thousand times
Warner supporters are starting to annoy me... please open a topic when there is some real "news" not just to keep Warner alive in the discussion ... for that I believe you must have your Warner section.. or is there one? I don't know, but I probably don't care enough to go look right now.

6. If you don't like Warner threads then quit posting in them.
I'll take repetive but positive threads about ANY candidate over the dozens of daily threads about the latest democratic whipping boy or girl.

7. To be honest... I'd never seen the poll results Penndem posted..
Sorry from this Clarkie/Warnerite..

We're going to have a KABILLION and one "my candidate" (whoever that candidate may be) posts between now and voting night 2008..

Who's your candidate? I'll try and post about them if you'd like..

11. True
but you don't see many folks who like Warner going into Clark or Kerry threads and disrupting them.

Unfortunately, the reverse is very common.

14. Same thing to Clark people than
I get tired of Clark threads all the time (unless it's news or an appearance). Give someone else a chance instead of always shooting them down no matter who it is!
