Busted!...GOP's new attack ads use phony soldier image (Slate)
http://www.slate.com/id/2132087/fr/nl/

The RNC's new Web video "Retreat and Defeat" starts with a flat-screen TV playing clips from Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, Sen. Barbara Boxer, and Sen. John Kerry. As they speak, a white flag waves over their faces while ominous music moans. Dean says the war in Iraq can't be won; Boxer says withdrawal should start after the Iraqi election; and Kerry says U.S. soldiers shouldn't be "terrorizing kids and children, you know, women." Then the camera pans back, and we learn that we've been watching these clips over the shoulder of a U.S. soldier dressed in desert camouflage, his service rifle strapped to his back. Candy canes hang on the wall just above the screen, which flashes the message: "Our soldiers are watching and our enemies are too."

The video conveys the impression that somewhere in Iraq, a soldier is having his mission and Christmas tarnished by weak-willed Democrats. Here is a frame from the ad and the actual picture of the soldier, taken two years ago. As shown below, the soldier was really watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas!<snip>

These knuckleheads have all the money in the world yet they still feel the need to lie to the American people. They just can't help themselves.

Why not call the ad, "How the Grinch Stole Democracy".

1. Is there anything about the repubs that's real beside the national debt?
I don't mind people living in fantasy worlds. But these creeps keep bringing the rest of us in with them and their make-believe world. Except for the dead and wounded of course.

7. I prefer my fantasy worlds to be populated with
elves, talking lions, dragons, and the like. Or perhaps just people in black leather. Or something like that.

I wish people could understand how they are being lied to. Does anyone like being lied to?

8. Since they control....
The Pentagon controls media access by the troops in the field, and they provide all of the television and radio programming, so they would have to furnish all the "morale" sapping programs themselves. STOOOOOPID PIGS. They recently pulled the one Air America show that they were going to allow off of Armed Forces Radio and Television Services and substituted more conservative programming instead.:wtf:

The military computers have websites that the soldiers are "forbidden" to look at and which are blocked if they try to access them. kind of like Fascist Parental Controls. So the troops can't go willy nilly looking at blogs unless they can find a computer that the military doesn't control.

So tell me, how are the troops going to see it in the first place? First time I heard crap like this I felt like banging my head on the table. Now, I'm going to try and find a metal trash can I can bite through.

Recycle cans are fine, but chewing through plastic just doesn't do it for me like chewing through metal.

14. remember the actors they hired for firefighters in the 911 footage used
in their ads? reality is never convincing enough for liars.

''We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And
while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll
act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and
that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you,
all of you, will be left to just study what we do.''

17. Aren't soldiers forbidden from appearing in political ads in uniform?
Why do I think the upshot of this will be that the soldier whose image is in the ad will get busted by the military and the producers will walk away scot-free?
