Anybody else get this 'letter' from Walter Cronkite?
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 11:07 PM by Emit
We just got a 'letter' in the mail today from Walter Cronkite--actually it was addressed to my Republican spouse--

When I anchored the evening news, I kept my opinions to myself. But now, more than ever, I feel I must speak out.

That's because I am deeply disturbed by the dangerous and growing influence of people like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell on our nation's political leaders.

Especially after Robertson and Falwell both shamefully blamed America's courts and the highest levels of our government for the horrific September 11 attacks on our nation. They said it happended because we "insulted God." Falwell went on to blame feminists, pro-choice Americans and other groups he despises...

~snip~

As a concerned person of faith, however, I have watched with increasing alarm as the Christian Coalition and other Religious Right groups manipulate religion to further intolerant, political agendas....

~snip~

Using religion as a tool to push their political beliefs--especially in a time of national tragedy--not only insults people of faith and good will, it also diminishes the positive, healing role religion can and should play in public life.

This is why I am speaking out today, and why I urge you to speak out, too....

~snip~

Join me as a proud member of The Interfaith Alliance today.

~snip~

Way to go Walter!

1. Yes, but it was addressed to me
a registered Democrat so I think they go by different lists. I'm on a lot of human rights things too.

Way to go Brother Cronkite!

Murrow, Cronkite, Huntley...

4. Why would Cronkite take this route?
He's famous enough, why wouldn't a simple press release put the point across?

Or he could put it in an op-ed, the media couldn't resist that.

The man who could influence presidents has a great pulpit. Why hide behind an organization? I don't know about this "Interfaith Alliance", but it seems to me like he doesn't need them to further his own opinion.

7. He does write op-ed pieces. But you may have noticed,
majority of newspapers owned by fewer and fewer people = more censorship in print media. Lots of papers are owned by men who not only can resist him but just plain want to keep his voice from being heard. He has not been flattering to media of late. He has been blunt that they are part of the problem

Also, fewer people read newspapers anymore. Not gonna reach many even if some papers run his pieces.

As for influencing presidents, in days past, sure, but not with the bozo in the WH now.

He is smart to use the web and email to get his message to a broader audience at a time when MSM has become a big part of the problem instead of a source of light on the issues. The man loves America. It must sadden him greatly to witness our collective fall. He is a real patriot to try and make a difference.

Folks, if you appreciate what this man has done over the years, write and let him know.

9. Sad that he and Helen Thomas are sidelined
The few people who can tell the American people with credibility what's going on in the country.

11. All part of the neocon plan. Probably Newt's hand in there.
Newt hates truth. Truth is, he is a reptile. Newt will tell you, over and over, that he is a man. He expects you to believe if he chants lies enough. Rove is a student.

There is a bio of Newt from about mid-90s that ran in New Yorker. If you are lucky enough to live near a library with good archives, look it up. Explains a good deal about how we got in all the messes we are in. Newt taught many GOP newbies the communication tools so successfully employed by the old boys from Berlin. It was a great read back when it first came out. Would be most enlightening now, looking back and looking hard at the present.

The bringers of truth have been sidelined in America. Ben Franklin's words do haunt me: ... a Republic, madam, if you can keep it.

There is no keeping it without the public having access to truth. That is why media consolidation was allowed back in the 80s. They changed the rules on the Fourth Estate so they could pull off their coup. They use their media to keep people drugged while they work on the means to really drug them into continued cooperation while they set policy to make us extinct.

Mr. Cronkite and Ms Thomas are brave beyond our understanding. But with age can come real freedom. My hope is they have that at least.

Write to them and let them know some of us get it and will carry on. Tell them Thank You, the good fight will continue. The nation will be restored.

8. I like what he said...
I got the same thing in the mail last week. It was a gutsy thing for "Uncle Walter" to do. The brochure that came with it explained that the group represents diverse religious and spiritual traditions...Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims,Sikhs---75 different faith traditions...as well as many Agnostics and Atheists. This is part of the information given:

What We Believe:

"The Interfaith Alliance promotes the positive, healing role of faith in civic life, and challenges intolerance and extremism. Rooted in faith traditions the world over, we offer Americans a mainstream, religiously-based agenda committed to individual dignity and the importance of community.

We stand FOR participation in the political process by people of faith, and AGAINST the view of the Religious Right that one's political beliefs are the measure of one's faith.

We stand FOR the proposition that America's diverse religious heritage is its greatest asset, and AGAINST the notion that only the majority faith tradition deserves public acknowledgement and respect.

We stand FOR the view that all the different faith traditions should have a voice in our nation's public life and be free to engage their prophetic voice. We OPPOSE efforts to use government resources or authority to give special preference to a particular religious institution or view.

We stand FOR inclusion and diversity in American society, and OPPOSE efforts to sow discord and hate, especially under the guise of religion.

We stand FOR healthy interaction between religion and government and work against efforts to impose religious litmus tests on public policy...."

I like what they are saying. There are 150,000 members in the Interfaith Alliance. Quite a contrast to over 2 million in the Christian Coalition.

If you want more information, go to www.interfaithalliance.org I feel this is an organization that could use the support from EVERYONE who believes in religious freedom.

10. I've gotten it a few times.
Completely agree with him on it. I wish he would go back to anchoring the news, or at least get his own show.
