Fundies go ballistic over 'Brokeback Mountain'

Reviewers Call 'Brokeback Mountain' Twisted
by Pete Winn, associate editor

Gay love story carries a high "ick" factor.

"Brokeback Mountain" is a cowboy movie where neither of the leading men gets the girl — they get each other.

The "gay Western love story" that will premiere Friday has won film-festival awards and is drawing lots of media attention. Reviewers have called it a "landmark."

Focus on the Family Action Analyst Caleb H. Price said Hollywood is doing all it can to get people interested in a film that they know most moviegoers will not want to see. Set in Wyoming in the 1960s, the R-rated love affair between two cowboys culminates in explicit gay sexuality.

< snip >

"If Christians protest too loudly," he said, "they can end up making the mistake of calling attention to a movie that otherwise may not do very well at the box office."

1. Caleb H. Price is the "I used to be gay!" guy...nothing like self-hate
to fan the fires of fundy psychosis.

7. I always wonder about those folks...
who are they thinking about when they make love to their new partner in a hetero relationship, and does that partner suspect?

10. I remember reading here on DU
There was a guy who worked for Focus on the Family and he was caught in a gay bar in DC. He claimed he didn't know he was in one but give me a break. Ten minutes in a gay bar and you know you're in a gay bar.

I had to ask one of the people I was with why there were only men on the tv screens.

thingy. I'm sure it will delight them. Gay and a prostitute all in one.... not that I find either offensive, but then I read what their Jesus said.

19. He's my Jesus too. He never even mentioned homosexuality ...
and he had no problem with prostitutes. Hell, the only people who ever pissed him off were those who attempted to take financial advantage of the poor (that would be today's Republican party).

5. Remember the outrage at Scorsese's
Last Temptation of Christ several years ago? I had no real interest in seeing the movie; my tastes tend more toward light romantic comedies. However, when the pastor of the church I attended said from the pulpit, on a Sunday morning, that congregation members should not go see that movie, that's when I decided I had to go. Several of us in the singles group went to go see it together.

Same thing here. This movie is not on my "must see" list, unless the fundies start making too big a deal out of it.

And I'm a sucker for romance no matter what. *sigh* And I've heard they're really straight so it would be interesting to see how well they do this film. I'll probably wait until HBO probably since I'm not a theatre person. I haven't been to a movie theatre in a long time.

18. That really gets me motivated at times
That is how I eventually found DU. I has basically written off the "mainstream" media and thought there was nothing of a liberal slant out there. Then, I heard about Bill O'Reilly's lawsuit against Al Franken for his "Lying Liars..." book. And, since I hate that sort of thing, I went out and immediately bought the book. It really opened my eyes!

Then, I went online & found oreillysucks.com and the site owner (stewert) directed me here a little over 2 years & 10,000+ posts ago.

15. Dear Fundies:
:hi:

There are, in fact, gay people. Everywhere. All the time. Whether you like it or not.

No matter how much of this  or this  you do, there will STILL be gay people.

Some of them even manage to fall in love and have happy lives, despite your best efforts. And I'm sure that some of them have been and are, in fact, cowboys.

However, since you seem unable and unwilling to accept this, feel free not to see the movie. Keep your ball and stay at home. :argh: why is that so difficult for you? I'm offended into a bright red fury by a LOT of your entertainment, and I WATCH SOMETHING ELSE INSTEAD.

40. These people need to go away
I am a straight woman and I want to see the movie. It looks really good! There was one scene in the trailer where Jake Gyllenhal is driving away and looking at Heath Ledger in the side view mirror; I don't know, but it was pretty stirring.

Fundies hate all kinds of love. Poor things must have been neglected as children. They are so full of hate that they can't experience joy. They should be pitied. Truly pitied.
