NBC: Democrats giddy about chances in 2006

Democrats giddy about chances in 2006
But plenty of obstacles remain before taking control of Congress

By Mark Murray
Political reporter
NBC News
Updated: 11:13 a.m. ET Dec. 14, 2005

ORLANDO, Fla. - Talk about a difference. This time a year ago, Democrats were in the midst of their winter of discontent. They had failed to defeat George W. Bush in the presidential election, they had lost four seats in the Senate, and they also had lost more ground in the House. "We've got to reassess ourselves," Democratic strategist James Carville lamented after the elections. "We've got to be born again."

But as prominent Democrats (including those eyeing a presidential bid in 2008) gathered here in Walt Disney World over the weekend for the Florida Democratic Party’s conference, the mood was upbeat, boastful even, about picking up seats in next year’s midterm elections -- and perhaps even regaining control of Congress. "I am hugely optimistic about our chances," former Sen. John Edwards, who was John Kerry's running mate, told reporters.

"We're coming, and we're going to getcha," the usually mild-mannered Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa told the gathering Saturday.

Did Disney World make these Democrats a bit, well, goofy? Hardly. They have plenty of reasons to feel optimistic about next year's elections. Bush's poll numbers remain at politically perilous levels, although they have begun to inch up. The public also is still dissatisfied with how the Bush administration has handled the Iraq war, the economy, and Hurricane Katrina.

3. "Giddy".. How republican of NBC to characterize it that way
when Newtie & the gang were taking over congress, they were portrayed as "bold..inventive..decisive..responsive".. They were GIDDY and Vindictive, but the press paid little attention to their methods..

Dems had better watch their steps with proclamations of "taking over".. the press is NOT our friend.. Dems need to just concentrate on issues and figuring out a way to translate the repubican excesses and the "cure" into terminology that ordianry people can understand.

4. How 'bout the media focus on the with majorities in the House and Senate?
I'm sick of headlines detailing how divided the Dems are! The GOP is divided. America is divided. The intention of this administration from 2000 on was to divide.

7. Notice the article and headline hardly match
The article goes into depth about the chances of a Dem takeover of the House, Senate, and governorships. I didn't find anything to complain about in the article, which seemed even-handed and straightforward. The headline is the insulting part. The headline is not usually written by the article writer.

I've seen it pointed out before, on the Media Matters website I think, when article headlines don't match or even contradict the story. This is strictly the editors at work, and it is a demonstrable place where conservative bias shows up in the printed (or print related) media.

8. Rather than just complain here..

..I sent the following email to the MSNBC editor:

I wish to complain about the headline on MSNBC.com that accompanies the article by Mark Murray about the 2006 elections. The article is a serious analysis of the public’s discontent with the current state of affairs, and the challenges the Democrats face in taking advantage of that discontent. The article’s headline, however, is inappropriate in its use of the term “giddy” to describe the Democrats.

The word giddy can either mean “frivolous” or “dizzy”. Its usage in modern English is entirely associated with lightweight situations, and using it to describe Democrats in a headline of a story that is meant for serious political discourse can only be considered as a sign of disrespect.

If the editor cannot keep from injecting bias into the wording of the headlines, could he or she at least keep from contradicting the content of the article? The article specifically states that the Democrats are not “goofy” for being upbeat about their chances, and discusses the sobering realities of the way Democrats are perceived by the public. I find nothing in the article that would warrant the use of such a term as “giddy”.

10. One note of caution the Dems SHOULD have, not mentioned here...
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 03:42 PM by calipendence
... is that the DLC still has too much power, and does corrupt one of the things that the article does cite as a concern. Their message! They need to get rid of their "special interest ownerships", so that they can truely carry messages that legitimately say they are the party of the "people", and not corporations! THAT will win them votes in the middle (not the "pseudo-moderate" stance that the DLC members claim they have that they claim will win the party votes).
