I fear we have become the Soviet Union.
Invaded and occupied a country.

In a fight with national and foreign insurgents.

Ran up incredible debt in the process.

Ultimately collapsed because of the critical mass of all the above.

Sound familiar?

So what did Reagan have to do with ending the cold war? Well he spent billions and trillions of dollars to force the Soviets to spend the money and quicken their demise. The ironic thing is the debt he created is now partly responsible for what may very well be our demise.

I hope I am wrong. Tell me I'm wrong.

4. No, it is even closer than you think.
I was there several times in the 70s, 80s and again in the 90s just as it fell apart.

In large cities, buildings now require ID to go to private offices. That is so Soviet.
The government and military SPY on its own citizens. People are denied legal counsel, access to courts, and are held without charges.
Constitutional rights, no matter how pretty in print, are being destroyed in practice. (the Soviet constitution was truly a work of beauty, but in practice?)

We have a government incapable of telling the truth, hiring press-titutes, spinning stories and lying to its people - no different than the Soviet Union.

5. I've been thinking the same thing for a long time ...
Never having visited the USSR, I don't know what it's like there, but the signs all seem to be pointing toward us becoming the new "Evil Empire."

7. There is one difference.
The possibility of a sitting politician losing his office in an election was higher in the Soviet Union than in the United States.

9. Don't forget spying on citizens, controlled and limited news
and I see evidence of an Iron Curtain being built too. The airlines will be outta business soon and travel for the masses will be at thing of the past.

With increased cost for diesel, food will keep going up while production drops.

Look for more gutting of environmental laws and more toxins in air, water, soils and children. Who cares, the corporate state sure doesn't see any point in spending money to protect anybody or anything. The rich leaders can afford to live where it's clean. Everybody else can just die.

11. I have a friend from Soviet Georgia
who emigrated to the U.S. and she has been commenting on and noting our descent towards totalitarianism for the last decade or so. And believe me, she knows totalitarianism when she sees it. Some people call it Soviet-style; some call it fascism. Either way, we're screwed.
