Bush Caves to McCain on Torture
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 08:41 AM by rolleitreks
Haven't noticed this posted anywhere. I thought it odd, since whatever its practical effects it demonstrates some serious lame duckdom.

4. Yeah, but a pointless flip-flop for us and the world.
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 08:32 AM by Dhalgren
Someone finally got to him and Cheney and explained that almost everything that their administration does and has done is illegal. Let the little congress have its little "anti-torture" law - big deal. They will continue to do whatever it is that they want to do with complete impunity. They are above the law...

3. Who caved first?
McCain agreed to wording that allows no prosecution of "interrogators". Isn't that a free pass to torture?

5. As I understand it,
non-military interrogators have the same defense, that they were following lawful orders.

6. More bullshit for the Rubes.
We have a propaganda retreat from the "We can do whatever we like" position, but so far no requirement that anyone be held accountable or that anything actually be done differently. In other words, it's been agreed that the whole issue has been a PR disaster and that something needs to be done about the way it makes us look bad.

7. Haven't seen the original or the revised bill;
Who's to say that bushco 'caved' into anything? Remember that they only torture 'legally' and are proud that they do, because it makes merica safe for mericans!

8. What about the field manual on interrogations being rewritten??
I haven't seen anyone do a proper post-mortem on this all, or on what those changes in the field manual mean. It used to be a humane looking guide.

9. From what I have read, McCain's bill uses the field manual
as it's base and since the Pentagon RECENTLY (after McCain's bill was drafted) added a 10 page CLASSIFIED addendum to the manual specifically on interrogation 'techniques', this 'deal' is simply smoke and mirrors, imo.

10. No Compromise, No Victory
I do not see how this bill is a victory or a compromise. On paper it is supposed to be illegal to torture people. However, any CIA agent caught torturing a prisoner can just claim that they thought they were following a lawful order. In addition, the government will defend the agent and I think the government will do other things for the agent. I think the government will even pay the legal fees of the agent or give then military or government lawyers to defend the agent.
