Former Nader organizer to challenge Feinstein for Senate seat

By: Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO -- A Green Party member who co-authored a successful city initiative this fall urging public high schools and colleges to keep out military recruiters announced on Thursday that he will challenge Sen. Dianne Feinstein in next fall's election.

Todd Chretien, 36, of Oakland, is a former organizer for Ralph Nader's presidential campaign. He said his campaign will encourage frustrated anti-war supporters to vote and continue to push for peace.

"Senator Feinstein has made a habit for voting for President Bush. I will make a habit of voting against him," Chretien said at a news conference with Matt Gonzalez, a Green Party member and former president of the city's Board of Supervisors. Gonzalez ran closely against Mayor Gavin Newsom in the 2004 mayoral race.

"We will begin this campaign by gathering pledges for a million votes for peace in November 2006 which will demonstrate to Senator Feinstein that we, the California anti-war movement, mean business," Chretien said.

3. I don't like Feinstein anymore, but I wouldn't reward a Naderite
I am a native Californian. I voted for Feinstein in 1994 in my first election. If I was still a Californian I would want an alternative to her, and right now I think it would be a Libertarian candidate.

4. So far there's no GOP candidate.
This should get Dianne's attention.

She'll win re-election easy. But her votes w/ Bush are going to come back to haunt her.

5. Bad timing...
As it is my understanding she just signed on with Feingold's efforts to block reauthorization of the Patriot Act...which I believe just went down in flames.

Feinstein will win handily!

7. That's for sure.
With no serious candidate in the GOP, Dianne's got this one in the Prada bag.

10. This is great!
Feinstein will be reelected easily, but someone needs to keep her on her toes.
