Zarqawi Captured and Freed
Is anyone buying this story that the Iraqi Police captured Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi last year, but let him go because they did not realize who they had captured? Maj. Gen. Hussein Kamal made this claim either yesterday or a few days ago. I am not buying the idea that the Iraqi Police captured Zarqawi and then let him go because they did not realize he was the person who had been captured. If this had happened two to three years ago I could have believed the story. However, the war in Iraq has been going on for almost three years and Zarqawi's photo has probably been on every Arab TV station and his picture has probably been put on a large number of buildings, bulletin boards, and store windows. In addition, Zarqawi is supposed to be the number one terrorist in Iraq. Explain to me how the Iraqi Police could not have know they captured Zarqawi.

My only question is why would Maj. Gen. Hussein Kamal make this claim. At this time I am thinking this is to help the Bush Administration keep American soldiers in Iraq. I would think the reasoning would go as follows: the American soldiers have to stay in Iraq in that the Iraqi Police cannot accomplish the simple task of capturing the single most important terrorist in Iraq. Even when they get lucky and accidentally capture him they make the mistake of letting him go. Therefore, the American soldiers have to stay in Iraq much longer. So what do others think?

1. That was my first thought, too ...
... that by making Iraqi forces look incompetent, Bush shores up his argument for further occupation being necessary.

I don't buy this latest story any more than I've bought anything else this Administration has to sell.
