Just when Bush's falling numbers MAY be levelling off, he screws it up.
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 04:38 PM by Brotherjohn
When looking at all of the polls in tandem, perhaps Bush's big PR blitz on Iraq (and the elections) resulted in his falling numbers levelling off a bit. The ABC-Wash Post number is an anamoly in the big picture, or at best, an indicator of a slight overall uptick. But there will always be the true believers (about 30%). You can only fall so much w/o reaching a levelling point, unless something drastic happens.

Then, something drastic happened.
He goes and blatantly violates the law and the Constitution by illegally spying on American citizens (not to mention having the DOD spy on and label as "threats" peaceful anti-war groups made up of grandmothers).

Once the ramifications of this spying scandal sink in, his precipitous decline will resume. This thing has made him look worse than torture, worse than "Mission Accomplished", worse than just about any bone-headed, dictatorial over-reach he has engaged in so far. What's more, he is vociferously defending the practice, saying it's legal b/c Congress gave him the right to use whatever force is necessary to fight terrorists... including spying, without warrant, on American citizens that HE has solely decided are "in league with Al Qaeda". Congress, of course, did no such thing. What they passed was clearly and specifically concerning military action, and his role as Commander in Chief.

He's basically saying the Constitution is suspended, and he is now judge, jury and executioner! He's also coming off as a raving paranoid in saying it.

It makes him look downright Nixonian.

He'll be in the low 30s - high 20s in no time.

5. Well, yeah. And his attacking those who LEAKED it doesn't help.
Nor does actively trying to prevent the NYT from publishing it.

4. I never thought I'd see a president worse than Nixon in my lifetime
but here we are. Tricky Dick is looking better and better by comparison. This bastard is SO much worse and there are no "wise men" left in the Rethug party to go and talk sense to him. The people are going to have to drive THIS one out of office because he's not going anywhere voluntarily.

6. He IS in the low 30's...in non-Faux news reality.
How could his numbers have possibly climbed so quickly??? None of his speeches contain much new.

Plus the "spying on America" scandal. And near indictment of Rove. PLEASE!

He's is low 30's...if not 20's...at least.

7. He confessed to multiple felonies on NATIONAL TV????
That's the part I still don't get.. just how dumb do you have to be to confess on TV.

What an idiot... Nixon was a hell of a lot smarter...

12. Yes, there is always that 30% no matter what. I bet even a white
supremacist president would always have the "silent majority" 20% of support.

10. I think the slight bounce is purely reflexive --
When the NSA stuff came out and he was immediately set upon by the left and the moderates and the libertarians and, well, just about everybody, the faithful rallied to his defense.

But in another few days it will sink in just what they were defending, and his numbers will continue their freefall. I think he's going to beat Nixon by a safe margin.

14. Bush can never fall below 25%. That is the hard core right wing base.
The lowest ratings Bush can have are as follows:

Approve: 30%
Disapprove: 68%

Sadly, it's come to this. I do not see how his ratings can fall below 30%. There are just too many brainwashed morons out there.
