Bill Schneider's Play of the Week

The candor of George Bush
President's speeches on Iraq signal new realistic tone

By Bill Schneider
CNN Washington Bureau
Friday, December 16, 2005; Posted: 9:46 p.m. EST (02:46 GMT)

Bush used his speech Wednesday to take responsibility for "wrong" prewar intelligence on Iraq.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- All in all, President Bush has had a bad year. But this week was a good one for him. Good enough to claim this week's political Play of the Week.

This week, President Bush did something unusual for him. He acknowledged mistakes in Iraq.

<snip>

This week, McCain got Bush to reverse course and sign on to the ban.

The president refused to treat it as a defeat.

"We've been happy to work with him to achieve a common objective," Bush said.

So, my question is -- does CNN hire political analysts by driving up to a day labor site and asking if anyone wants a job?

6. Oh,
In order to ensure equal employment opportunity for every applicant, all hiring decisions will be made without regard to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, citizenship status, veteran status, or disability.

That leaves political affiliation.

2. Schneider
Bill Schneider is a fellow at the either the American Enterprise Institute or the Heritage Foundation, maybe both. Take whatever he says with his knowledge his extreme conservative leanings into account.

8. My favorite part
I think my favorite part is:

This week, McCain got Bush to reverse course and sign on to the ban.

The president refused to treat it as a defeat.

"We've been happy to work with him to achieve a common objective," Bush said.

In other words, Schneider takes as evidence that the president is not treating this a defeat, *'s own words. Now, a political analyst might consider that it is in *'s self interest to sell it that way, and that, in fact, it really can't be that at all. Or, as some have argued, the McCain "course reversal" really doesn't hurt the Bush torture policy at all. I don't know, but I do know that an analyst shouldn't just take the politician's statement as evidence.

11.  This isn't even good reporting, let alone analysis.
What Doofus did was to acknowledge that the intelligence was bad. He did not take responsibility for that. He took responsibility for the decision to invade Iraq.
Honestly, I can never make up my mind whether the pundits are dumb or conspirators. I watched Andrea Mitchell tonight and was appalled. Not only for her willingness to carry water for W but she was barely able to articulate her thoughts. I question whether these overpaid egotists are half as well read as the participants on this Board. They are a pitiful lot.

12. This is AEI Bill Schneider.
Bush did NOT apologize for anything. Bush still thinks he is right (which he is not). And again:
CNN = "Certainly Not News"
