Preoccupation with the dominance-submission, strong-weak, leader-follower dimension; identification with power figures; overemphasis upon the conventionalized attributes of the ego; exaggerated assertion of strength and toughness.

Destructiveness and Cynicism:
Generalized hostility, vilification of the human.

Projectivity:
The disposition to believe that wild and dangerous things go on in the world; the projection outwards of unconscious emotional impulses.

Sex:
Exaggerated concern with sexual "goings-on."

No way can you answer some of these with any certainty.

For example:

No sane, normal, decent person could ever think of hurting a close friend or relative.

Without even getting into what exactly sane, normal and decent mean, I think EVERY sane, normal or decent person would seriously consider hurting a close friend or relative if that friend or relative were, say, pointing a gun at someone and hitting him/her were the only way to stop a murder.

Or how about:

Nowadays more and more people are prying into matters that should remain personal and private.

Are we talking about the government SPYING on us, or are we talking about child abuse investigations? Because I'm against the first and for the second, and I think they could both qualify under that sentence.

And finally, what does this:

Yeah, but it still just DEPENDS. The one about falling is supposed to be:

I don't think having an actual urge to jump from a high place qualifies as a "mystical determinant".

But then I did disagree with it on practically everything. 1.6

...it's the "prying" and "secrecy" questions that dinged me from getting a coveted sub-integer score.

Only answered down this particular polls "fascist continuum" towards totalatarianism because I was thinking of the secret laws that our totalitarian-leaning gov't has recently admitting are in place and, "btw, FU, prole" stuff.

Had they worded those two questions in a more totalitarian secrecy vs. paranoia of secrecy manner, I'd have sub one-point decimal scoring.

But I have some questions about the value of the quiz. It seems to me that many of the questions/answers are too tied to the context of 50 years ago and a particular answer then would not carry the same implication as the identical answer now.

Heck I like these tests, they're always interesting.

And I just want to say that I don't want to even have to look at the people who answered some of these questions differently than I did. I think this is the asshole scale, not the Authoritarian scale. Seriously, whatever this scale measures is a HUGE button for me with other people. I HATE the kind of people who would have answered at the other end. Literally HATE with every fiber of my being. Even taking this test pissed me off, just thinking about how there are people in the world who agree with some of those questions. I think I need a drink now.

Somebody with posting priviledges over at Free Republic should post and see what they say. Just for fun! I bet the mean score is between 4 and 5 over there.

The operative phrase is "to society." If it'd said "for society" I'd have taken it to be asking what I thought was more important. Come to think of it, the businessman is more important to society - which exists to protect itself. The artist is more important to culture - which can be a threat to society.

So on that kind of question, I could have given the Nazis exactly the answer they wanted while actually disagreeing with it.

What's interesting are the questions I responded to; they're all over the map, nor are they generalized answers either. And the questions themselves being so two-dimensional doesn't help either.

They are used in analysis of personality and family disorders.
This was a quick x-mas, on-line poll for fun, but still has relevance.

The airhead reference was from the site and not the original test which in it's totality was not represented.
However, I think, in my study of tests, it was fair for a short test.

I am a Liberal Airhead, scoring 2.4666, so I guess I belong right here at DU.

I have done Jungian research that raised my score on the test,
because of a certain question,
which I have found Statistical Correlations to human observation in my studies
and other have repeated these observable empirical correlations in observations of humanity.

I don't know about you guys but assertive statements of a factual nature aren't really appropriate on a test like this. For example "question" number 7 on this test is this: "Young people sometimes get rebellious ideas, but as they grow up they ought to get over them and settle down."

This is a statement where you should choose true or false, not agree or disagree. Simply put, given the data availuable from many psychologists, the correct answer would be true, or agree if you prefer. These types of questions or statements are misleading.

Another example of misleading statements is this one, number 22: "Wars and social troubles may someday be ended by an earthquake or flood that will destroy the whole world." Factually, this statement is problematic, not to nitpick but an asteroid strike, which, given current science, WILL actually hit sometime in the future, not an if or but in that statement, will end such problems, by causing the extinction of the human race, assuming we don't prevent it through artificial means. Without qualifiers, such statements as these are useless to figure anything out, I assume that the test creators are trying to put "Apoclapliptic Christians" in with Authoritarians, given the general context of the test, but then again, those knowing science would also agree with that statement, again without qualifiers listed. BTW: I listed Asteroid strike because it would cause both Earthquakes and Flooding.

It's kind of interesting what's considered "facist" thinking. I wouldn't think being superstitious is "authoritarian," but I guess to the extent it makes people give up control over their fate, it kind of is.

Within normal limits; an appropriate score for an American. (The overall average score for groups tested in the original study is listed in the 1950 publication as 3.84, with men averaging somewhat higher and women somewhat lower.)
