Air America Phoenix replaced by Christian Broadcasting Group
This happed the same week the City Council volted to eleimate the public Access stations that carry our Democratic Television Show even though the legislature refused to eliminate Public Access as a violation of free speech . This lives Phoenix and the surrounding areas with NO progressive talk or television at all. Merry Christmas and Happy Propaganda.

7. I've been listening to Air America by computer for almost a year.
That was through KPOJ (Portland OR). It's been very frustrating at times, with frequent transmission dropouts and really ANNOYING commercials.

I finally went to XM sat radio about a week ago, and am DELIGHTED!! It feeds into my computer's audio. From there, it can go out to a high performance FM xmtr so I can listen to it anywhere in my ap't. This is the one I got: http://www.xmradio.com/skyfi2/index.jsp

There's a $50 rebate (expires SOON!), so it wasn't too big a 'hit' on my wallet. Give it a look-see.

20. DANG!!!
I think I'd seen that mentioned a short while back, but I "tuned it out" since I had no need of the car accessory kit. but I could have ordered it there, ordered the home accessory kit elsewhere, "tossed" the car kit, and still saved fifty bucks plus!!!

As it stands, I'm in love with it!! If necessary, I'd have gladly paid list price. Reception at my downtown Seattle apt. is perfecto. I pulled the antenna back about 10' deep into the room, andit still worked fine. AAR has nothing of interest at this moment, so I'm listening to BBC.

Here's the FM transmitter I use: http://ccrane.com/radios/fm-transmitters/fm-transmitter.aspx Those using these radios at home should look it over. It not only puts out a strong signal, but the frequency readout make it very nice.

11. XM: One of our best buys EVER, and the receiver was FREE!!!
XM was one of the best things we ever did for ourselves. We never go in the car without it, and it plays almost constantly at home. Very few annoying commercials on AAR because they replace many of them with good content, not just better commercials. Incredible sound quality, even for talk. Talk channels include BBC World Service, CSPAN radio, and public radio. We never go on a trip now without listening to XM San Francisco traffic & weather first. I think the monthly fee is quite a value considering what you get.

Watch ads CompUSA ads carefully tomorrow (Dec 26) to see if the Roady2 receiver will again be free with rebate. Here on DU, w8liftinglady also knows about other discounts available online; she's the XM expert here, and without her, we never would have considered XM the day after Thanksgiving. Or PM me if you have questions.

19. Here's another reason NOT to move to Phoenix
Stagnant weather conditions are raising particulate pollution in the Valley to alarming levels. Friday was the 12th high-pollution advisory since the start of November.

The dirty air can trigger the same wheezy, sneezy, eye-running symptoms that normally come with a cold virus. People with medical problems - asthma, respiratory diseases, cardiac conditions - can end up in the emergency room.

The simple act of breathing shouldn't be a health hazard. Not in our own back yard. Not in the 21st century.

The Valley must take far more aggressive measures to clean up the air.

Particulate pollution is a filthy mix of soot, grit and grime of all types. These particles go deep into the lungs, irritating delicate tissues. They can carry toxic substances or the spores that cause Valley fever.

It was a post just like the ones in here. No decision has been made by the new owners on whether they will keep or get rid of Air America programming as far as I can tell.

17. Not only is the website up, but it may contain the answer to the confusion
air america phoenix weekends

a different view
Religious Programing with a difference... the goal of the program is to provide a venue for discussion of religious, spiritual and ethical issues facing our nation in an open and safe environment.

This Saturday, December 25th, is Christmas Eve Day. You are invited to call in and say hello. You can even wish folks at KXXT a Merry Christmas (or happy holidays).

I am struck at how casually superlatives are brought to bear on almost every topic... the example that is front and center right now is that everything is a "war"; war on drugs, war on terror, war on Christmas. Cut me a break... there is no "war" on Christmas. There is a discussion (or ought to be) about the role of government in funding sectarian religious displays. There is a discussion, in the private sector, about which greeting is likely to sell the most toys. But no war on Christmas.

As always, your comments on the intersection of religion and the public square are invited.

Join the discussion each Saturday morning at 9 am with your host, Rev. Dr. Walter F. Wieder.

So there you have it.

Religious programming, yes.

Religious RIGHT programming, no.

And apparently this is just one program on their weekend schedule.

If they don't have Franken, Randi, Malloy, and the DLC Mush Clone on in their regular time slots tommorrow, THEN worry.

Shit, let me rephrase that. Wait until January 3, since so many radio shows are swappings hosts over the holidays.

12. I have been traveling to small towns in the midwest for work. The cable
that is available on the Cox network is unbelievable. One religious show after the next. I have nothing against religious programming but there was so much! The programming was very sanitized in every way. I went to McDonalds to get an iced tea and Fox News was playing in the "Lounge" area. No wonder no one knows anything.

15. This comes at the same time that the local AZ
tv station KAZT, has raised (almost doubled) its air time rates, forcing the broadcast by the one non fundamentalist right wing church to stop.

They have Coral Ridge Hour, Robertson among others.

The one leaving was called "Inspire and Awaken," by Unity of Phoenix.

A very upbeat, unconventional, uplifting, loving show and services and beliefs.

This stinks really badly.

23. It's not going to matter in the long run once satellite takes over
Satellite and on-demand will all but destroy AM and FM radio. Get your XM or Sirius if you can and be happy once again. Sirius has Stephanie Miller; XM has AAR and Ed Schultz. Either way you're going to be a lot happier because you'll be able to listen as you travel without a lot of interruptions. Plus there's music to suit every taste.

24. Do you think another station will pick them up?
I sure wouldn't blame it on Arizona as a state.. but like others said --the new station owners..

I'm not sure how you can get the attention of local radio broadcasters there, but if there's a market.. wouldn't another station step in??

What happens to that station if their new programming turns out to be a great big FLOP?

Geez.. even here in Anchorage, Air America and the Jones Radio Network (which airs Big Eddie and Stephanie Miller) are HOT, HOT, HOT!!!

32. Apparently ratings and profitability aren't the #1 motivator in media.....
....anymore.

What happens to that station if their new programming turns out to be a great big FLOP?

Remember when MSRNC cancelled their top rated show (Phil Donahue) and replaced him with a jackass who was so hateful they had to fire him after two months? (Michael "savage" Weiner)

There's not even a question whose ratings were better, it was a matter of ideology there.

And if the new owners of this Phoenix affiliate bought the station for ideological reasons, then they probably won't care if they lose money. Assuming they DO change the programming, that is. Many AAR affiliates are owned by Clear Channel and other corporate radio chains so occasionally they'll back off on their Bush-worship long enough to make a buck. Unfortunately these are also the outlets who bury AAR's more liberal programs in their market and replace it with DLC mouthpiece Limbaugh clones :(

Anyway, the question remains ---- who's on the air today, Phoenix?

25. I just wrote a scathing LTTE about our city commissioners because
they voted against the will of the people. I was at the meeting and I know what Floridians want. 95% of the people that spoke were AGAINST proposed development, (the Kitson one, sorry if I bore people with this obsession of mine).

Anyway, after all that and a staff of experts saying that the proposal was dangerous and unfeasible the fucking commissioners voted 4-1 FOR IT!.

I've sent my letter to some other commissioners who are real happy with it but I'm waiting to see if it makes it into the paper. If not we have a very large email list and a lot of people to forward it to.

But it just BURNS ME that these people, who are supposed to support the will of the people just do what the fuck they want!

I think it is time for your state/city to out the slime that did this. It is an abomination.

We need to remember that our politicians work FOR US. We should not have to be at their frigging mercy. I remember someone telling me not to piss off the commissioners because we wanted the on our side. Well all that nicey stuff has gotten us no where. I am starting to fight dirty just like them.

I suggest you do the same.

28. They were basically lied to!
The program content was not supposed to change. The only reason why anyone found out about it was through an e-mail that was sent to the KXXT offices by mistake from the new owners.

KXXT is a great station run by quality people. Hopefully it will land on it's feet. The ratings have been better than expected for a station that's just over a year old and they have broken even in less than a year.

All this with NO advertising - just word of mouth. A real grass roots success.

Kxxt has also become one of the shining stars in the Air America network. A lot of other AAR stations look at Phoenix as a template on how to make this programming work for them. It's one thing just to flip a switch and broadcast the network AAR feed all day to your listeners, it's quite another to blend local talent into the mix and make it work as well as they have.

The one saving grace here is that all the station content, as well as the call letters, belong safely in the hands of the station manager. So at this point they are searching for another station that they can package all this and move it over before the drop dead date.

I have been a long time advertiser on AAR Phoenix and believe that they will in fact, pull this off.

This station is way too good to say goodbye to.

30. Great that you advertise. In Chicago WCPT the ratings are 1.1 which is
pretty good considering the signal is terrible and is a daytime signal so now it's 7am til 430pm. The station, says that rightwingers are harassing the sponsors. They even have a commercial asking the listeners to try to help them find new sponsors. Creepy. I'm afraid they will lose lots of listeners with their weak signal and short hours. It's just so sad that it's so hard to get the message out.

31. A Warning from History about Christianity
The Religious Right is really OUT OF CONTROL and is exerting a greater and greater influence on our society. They are flexing their muscles in the political process, the economy and our entire culture.

Let us remember that the first time Christianity spread rapidly and gained control of the government (in Rome from 200 - 500 AD) it resulted in the utter collapse of Western Civilization and ushered in 1,000 years of darkness, superstition, ignorance and suffering.

Finally, after a millennium of Darkness, mankind began to see the Dawn of The Age of Reason and The Enlightenment. Humanity recovered some dignity, science was freed from the chains of religious superstition and real progress began.

The Constitution of the United States of America was one of the crowning achievements of The Enlightenment, being a document for the Establishment of a government that did NOT MAKE ONE SINGLE REFERENCE TO "GOD". With the establishment of the United States, government as well as science was freed from the domination of religious superstition.

Now, every day in the news there is some story about how the religionists are exerting their influence. Radical Clerics like James Dobson and Jerry Falwell get air time on network news. Religionists are organizing and boycotting businesses that do not adhere to their version of personal morality.

The specter of religious superstition is once again casting a frightening shadow over our world. The ghosts and demons of the Dark Ages, once believed to be banished forever by Reason, are again haunting our culture. Christianity destroyed civilization once before - it could happen again.
