Howard Zinn's "Voices of a People's History of the United States"
Edited on Mon Dec-26-05 06:08 PM by Moochy
On Link-TV (DirectTV Ch. 375/Dish Network: 9410) now, and on Democracy Now's Website:
http://www.democracynow.org/index.shtml Good stuff!

Today we spend the hour with readings from a Voices of a People's History of the United States edited by historian Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove. It is the companion volume to Zinn’s legendary People’s History of the United States – which has sold over a million copies.

We will hear dramatic readings of speeches, letters, poems, songs, petitions, and manifestos. These are the voices of people throughout U.S. history who struggled against slavery, racism, and war, against oppression and exploitation, and who articulated a vision for a better world.

Speakers include Josh Brolin, Viggo Mortensen, Sandra Oh, Marisa Tomei and Danny Glover.

2. I bought that book at the 9/24 DC March
and read it on the way back home. It's excellent on its own, as well as a companion to the History. Thanks for the tip; the readings should be great.

3. I love reading and hearing the primary sources
Edited on Mon Dec-26-05 06:40 PM by Moochy
A few college courses in Medieval Studies by the incredible Kevin Roddy http://medieval.ucdavis.edu/resume.html at UC Davis taught me that primary sources are one of the best way to get a true sense of a time and place.
I found that the People's History of the United States had so many of these primary sources: letters speeches, and other texts written contemporaneously, and was very refreshing to see history told from people engaged in a struggle of survival against the predatory forces of the day. Much has changed, and yet much remains the same!

4. Everyone should read Howard Zinn's books. It should be mandatory
for high school and college.

I read and re-read his books all the time to keep my sanity and hope.

6. I leant my copy out
And I need to buy a new one... but I know for a fact that it's still being passed around among friends of friends.
This whole program is available on DVD apparently too. Might have to grab the full hour and a half, since the show was just excerpts.

:kick: bumpety bump! :patriot:

9. I found People's History to be a difficult read
Can anyone suggest anything that isn't quite as thick and, I guess, detailed. It's just a brutal read. I know it's accurate but, damn.
