Embattled Bush seeks new ideas to inspire the nation
By Francis Harris in Washington
(Filed: 30/12/2005)

President George W Bush and his advisers were yesterday reported to be planning a 2006 relaunch, emphasising a newly cautious White House.

With the critical annual state of the union address to Congress only weeks away, aides are already hammering out versions of what the president will say.

However, the speech is expected to contrast starkly with Mr Bush's 2005 state of the union address, which promised an extremely ambitious programme of domestic reform.

...But another adviser summoned to the meetings said the chance of resuscitating a battered administration were very limited. "This is an exhausted administration," said Michael Tanner of the Right-wing Cato Institute. "It's going to be very hard for to come out with a big new initiative."

The article goes on to discuss how much of Bush's 2005 plans, such as Social Security reform, tax reform and amnesty for illegal immigrants, are "dead in the water." Iraq and Katrina are also mentioned as reasons for the downturn in President Bush's fortunes.

The administration has been conferring with RW legislators and members of RW thinktanks for ideas on the SOTU speech.

It does seem to me that if he is seeking new ideas, perhaps the counsel of the same old RW sources is not such a good idea.

38. Here's another:
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 02:43 PM by Zorra
He could give a speech, up close and personal, in front of a live audience comprised of a large assembly of the Iraqi Resistance, imploring them to lay down their arms and accept the PNAC occupation.

I'm sure that the Iraqis would just shower him with flowers, out of their overflowing love and gratitude toward him.

That would truly inspire me, I gotta say.

16. No kidding!
When I hear stuff like this, I always envision a ship that's starting to take on water.

Suddenly, you see these disgusting rats that were hiding down in the food pantry. Now they're crawling up to the surface to jump overboard.

Sorry rats, it's a little late.

10. I heard recently that there are two "camps" advising him.
One, the Rove gang, who advises agressiveness; the other is advising "owning up" to past mistakes. So now, it appears he is trying to do both! LOL

We really need to be rid of this fool.

So expect an opening line like:

"Terrible mistakes have been comitted by the administration in the last five years however, if knowing what we know now I had to make those decisions to make those same terrible mistakes over again I would because they are right for America. That's what being decisive is all about and I'm the President and it's my job to be decisive"

9. Short of resignation (someone beat me to that)
how about something refreshing like WORKING and not campaigning; meeting with us 'little people' without handlers picking and choosing who will be allowed in the royal chamber; doing what he said his admin would do for NOLA and the Gulf states; stop his minions from torturing as he said they don't do... just those for starters.

19. You're right. He hasn't had ANY new ideas
since he campaigned in 1999 and 2000. His 'ideas' were dreamed up by the neocons in the 90s. They've pretty much done all that they had hoped to do - just remains to invade the remaining countries on his list - Syria, Iran, Libya, probably France just for fun.

Sheesh. This is gonna be a long three years.

you just wrote it for him! LOL

Sadly, I think you probably nailed it exactly. You should keep a copy, and compare it to the actual SOTU speech.

The only thing you missed is the heartwarming stories of Iraqis who are experiencing democracy for the first time, designed to pull at our heartstrings. (He'll conveniently forget to mention all the Iraqis who have died, and that they are all far worse off than before the war.)

Ordinary (unscreened) Americans would approach the microphone, recite their grievances with *, then throw one of the autographed baseballs from his collection at the bullseye. A direct hit would dunk * (ideally in crude oil, but that's expensive these days, so I would settle for some New Orleans floodwater).

That would be plenty inspiring. I would definitely tune in to watch that.
