Labels do not guarantee presidents will govern as portrayed...
Bush sold his cornbread as "moderate compassionate conservatism". It has been anything but. So the question we should be asking is, what label will best win the next election, a "moderate" message or a more "populist" message ? The label is only good for winning elections, not for governing.

1. He's the first "compassionate convservative". So everyone just
guessed at the definition. He's very compassionate to the rich. And he conserves the Constitition by not using to much of it. As for moderate, well, Cheney is probably the extreme compassionate conservative.

2. People want to vote for somebody
who seems to have strong convictions and doesn't come accross all wishy washy and going along to get along. Dems seem to think that's what being "moderate" means. As long as they continue to labor under that basic fallacy, I don't see them winning significant victories.

Also, if they think that "moderate"=corporate, they're likely to end up alienating even more people. Their isn't really a strong constituency for corporatism, even among the so called "moderate" voters.
