2. It would be a disaster if it happened, but I am skeptical that it will
First of all, the media in general has NOT been too accurate in their assessment of anything lately

but most importantly, we have a Shiite theocracy in control in Iraq thanks to bush and company, who would NOT look to kindly on us attacking the largest Shiite country. It would immediately put our troops in Iraq in even more danger, unify Iran, and probably push Iraq into a full out civil war. In addition, the IWR DID NOT GIVE BUSH THE AUTHORITY TO GO INTO IRAN WITHOUT CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL. I believe Congress would NOT just sit by if he did this alone. Of course, you never know, but the Democrats BETTER DO WHAT THEY WERE ELECTED TO DO

3. Iran is much larger, more people, more national identity than Iraq.
And we see how well] things are going in Iraq! To go into Iran with anything less than everything the US military has got would be suicide. To go in with everything would certainly give Russia, China, and Europe reason to take action.

Do I doubt the neocons, PNACers and all the war profiteers would be insane and driven enough to try it? You betcha. They don't give a shit what it costs Americans or anybody else, if there's money to be made and pipelines to build.

Do I think Congress would stand still for it? No, with qualifiers... If there were another 'Pearl Harbor' like attack in the US, all bets are off about ANY limits on the crazy bastards.

5. I expect the very worst. War on Iran would clear the air for Bush.
It would be time for another end run around the
rule of law.

7. An the junta gets more exposed, they will get more dangerous
in their self protecting. Worries me that they seem to have no inhibitions. What might they do to assure not being removed from power and standing for war crimes trials, to say nothing of the domestic crime spree they have been engaged in?

A huge war would certainly work for them to solidify power in the face of Congress now looking to nail them in an effort to save their own skins during this election cycle.

6. Could be the "tactical nuclear strike" option against Iran
Cheney and Company have been itching to put into play their plan to use "tactical nuclear attacks" against some enemy-- air strikes against supposedly reinforced subterranean targets using small nukes to hit them deep down. Iran, for them, probably represents the perfect pretext-- an enemy too strong to invade with ground forces, so why not just nuke 'em instead?

The Cheneyites are banking the idea that the world would go with it since the nukes are "low-yield" and supposedly would have less collateral damage (sure, where have we heard that before), but methinks we'd pay a heavy price for crossing the nuclear threshold.
