U.S. Senators Who Made Us Proud in 2005
From Bob Geiger:

<snip>
Think all Democratic Senators are made of the same stuff? Think again. Then, take a look at the Senators who had absolutely zero weasel-worthy votes in 2005:

Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
Jon Corzine (D-NJ)
Ted Kennedy (D-MA)
John Kerry (D-MA)
Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Jack Reed (D-RI)
Paul Sarbanes (D-MD)

No politician can please everyone, but when you look at the sheer number of important votes that these seven Senators had to be involved with, it is commendable and somewhat astounding that they voted like real Democrats on every, single one of them.

<snip>

It's a shame we're losing Senators Corzine and Sarbanes this year – the former is the next Governor of New Jersey and the latter is retiring –and, regardless of what you think of John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign, his performance in the Senate last year certainly made me feel like my support was well placed.

Kerry and Jack Reed deserve special notice for their efforts to get the GOP majority to fund the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to help the elderly and disabled heat their homes this winter. Sadly, they failed, but they managed on three occasions to get the matter to the Senate floor for a vote, only to have it rejected each time at the hands of the GOP leadership. Likewise, Ted Kennedy attempted twice in 2005 to help working Americans by getting a hike in the federal minimum wage, which has been at $5.15 per hour for nine years.

2. Worthy of a kick and a nom! Some have really been trying,
despite being in the minority. I'd have to add Reid, Durbin, and Byrd, though perhaps some of their votes haven't been as clear-cut.

4. Depends on the issue, but they are all still great Dems in my book.
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 08:40 PM by blm
You can take ANY particular vote that reflects some personal view held by the Senator, twist it into a capital offense and watch as too many are willing to kick that Dem to the curb.

I learned in decades of supporting Kucinich that there are still strong progressive hearts in most of these people even when their vote is contrary to what you believe.

16. He had Durbin as very high.
Oddly, or interestingly, Hillary Clinton scored very high as well.

8. Nominations
He voted for John Roberts (And for Condiliar Rice, but I'm not sure if that vote counted in this survey.)

Sen. Feingold did vote against the Bankruptcy Bill and against CAFTA. That's pretty special right there.

10. The Roberts vote was one of the 50 votes he counted for the list.
I don't remember if the Rice vote was one.

9. Geiger has a link in the article
to a list of what he calls 'weasel votes'. Perhaps some of Russ' votes were on that list. No matter, Russ is still an excellent Senator.

11. Just a guess, but he tends to vote for most Presidential appointments
so I wouldn't be surprised if that was where he got knocked for his votes.

It seems strange but Evan Byah seems more likely (IMO) to vote against Prez appointments then Feingold.

Different Senators have different standards for how they vote on appointments.

13. You're probably right
I guess that's one reason why I do like his criterion. It seems like he picked the criterion then looked at the Senators votes. Rather than trying to craft a poll to make certain Senators look good.

30. Bullshit. Let's do some comparison.
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 10:44 AM by MH1
Geiger set a criteria of 50 votes. Byrd made some poor votes.

Which item are you saying that "Byrd spoke up on when it mattered"? Filibustering judges? Kerry was there too. DSM? Oh wait. Kerry was first on that one. Did Byrd ever even show up on DSM? ANWR? Energy policy? Kerry kicked ass on those. Was Byrd there (I actually don't recall. If he was, enlighten me.) LIHEAP? Kerry and Reed. Iraq War? Kerry proposed much of what Murtha did, on 10/26 at Georgetown, before Murtha's excellent, impassioned speech on the House floor.

How about these:

Where is Senator Byrd on election reform?

I don't understand why you would choose to promote Byrd, if election reform is your issue. I don't see him doing much.

Not that I dislike Byrd generally. I'm sure he has his reasons for sitting on the sidelines of election reform. It's just that I can't see the logic in your post, given these facts.

25. Wow, you can set your watch by it!
Repeat RW myth much? Get off it. Kerry didn't miss shit, and clearly the author of this article and everyone else on this thread doesn't think so.

It's getting old. SO PREDICTABLE. SO REPETITIVE.

Doesn't that cancerous, bitter hate start to wear on you after a while? Give it a rest.

21. Kerry just stopped another attack on ANWR over the holidays.
They tried to sneak it into the defense bill and Kerry kicked Stevens and Frist's *ss!

Stevens went to the well and had a meltdown after the vote.

Yes, he laid waste to that little schmuck, indeed.

31. Russ Feingold will never make a list like this
and that is exactly why he's my favorite senator and we need more like him.

Opinion polls and special interests tend to have close to 0 effect on the good senator. As a libertarian Democrat, he's the only one to vote against the Patriot act and promised to filibuster. He votes his conscience even when everybody tells him it's political suicide.

You'd have to ask him yourself, but IMO he votes for the president's appointments no matter which party the president is from. That's just his principle. IIRC Orrin Hatch supported Ruth Bader Ginsburg back in the day for the same reason. I googled but couldn't find anything terrible about John Roberts so I didn't oppose him either. Samuel Alito on the other hand is a criminal.

For a Fundamentalist Methodist, shrub seems to be packing the court with Roman Catholics. Makes you wonder what he's up to...I bet it starts with A and ends with bortion.

For the Patriot Act block in the Senate alone, not to mention all the other good things he does. He does vote his conscience and does the right thing.
