UH OH...Condi on "tougher" action against Iran "a time of our choosing"...
Iran rejection of nuclear deal becoming clear: Rice
Thu Jan 5, 2006 02:34 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Thursday Iran's resumption of atomic fuel research would signal its rejection of a diplomatic solution to the nuclear crisis, but stopped short of saying this would finally trigger a U.S. push for U.N. Security Council action.

Rice said she hoped "diplomacy has not been exhausted," but added that it was "becoming clearer" Iranians are not accepting a diplomatic compromise that constrains their nuclear ambitions.

Rice addressed State Department reporters after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday Iran would resume atomic fuel research next week despite warnings from the West that this would endanger efforts to find a diplomatic compromise.

She said if Iran proceeded with sensitive nuclear research "it really will be a sign that they are not prepared ... to actually make diplomacy work." Rice refused to be pinned down on a timeline for tougher diplomatic action, but said Washington will take the case to the Security Council at "a time of our choosing."

2. What would Iran do in return
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 04:13 PM by Marie26
Let's say the US decides to do airstrikes against Iran. Wouldn't this give Iran the perfect window to declare war on both the US & Isreal? The US is far away, but we're occupying the country right next door to Iran. Couldn't Iran start lobbing missiles at US positions in Iraq? And once Iran does this - isn't it the perfect window for Bush to send the troops from Iraq to begin a ground-level invasion of Iran? Which prompts Russia & China, as Iran's allies, to declare war against the US? Which starts World War III? (Sorry for the alarmism of this post; just wondering if this is at all possible.)

10. Well, that's comforting.
:yoiks: It's a scary thought, & it's hard to put much past Bush & Co. at this point. But at least the Congress & media are starting to put the brakes on this Administration now - hopefully we can avoid a crisis.

3. War works both ways, Condosleeza!
Just as we would prepare to fight some country that acted in a tyrannical manner, such as declaring war, bombing our country and torturing our people for no good reason, so should any other country! Dumbasses are going to get us all killed. How can the BushCo nutjobs not see they have become what we detest? Oh, wait... no conscience... never mind.

4. Good point. My Grandfather had a saying for this.
Don't pull or threaten using a gun on someone unless you are willing to shoot. All options which for us includes Nuclear options can be overwhelming to any nation. Who really knows what the Iranians have in a bunker somewhere? Not U.S. intelligence which are notoriously unreliable.

Yes, we are well on the way to becoming what we detest.

12. China will not let the U.S.
Go to war with Iran. They are the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, and will not let that supply line be impeded by anyone.

Chinese diplomats have warned the U.S. by saying, "You are on the other side of the world, but we can WALK to Iran."

13. It would be like Bush to get 10000 of our troops killed or even more
by a strike on Iran signaling to N. Korea an unleashing of all holy hell on South Korea and our troops.

To say nothing of the idea that China could easily send 1/10th of their army to fight against the U.S. and still have plenty to invade Taiwan while the U.S. is otherwise engaged.

This president is angling for Armageddon it seems.
