Uh, in 1994, didn't the Republicans claim that
they were the moral party?

If (and I have a good saying about "if, if, if ...") that was true, then why would they have to make ethics such an issue now?

I remember, there was a HUGH scandal about "writing bad checks" in 1994 . . . now damn near everybody can write bad checks . . . overdraft protection, payroll loans, yadda yadda yadda . . .

Oh, and the Repukes were really up in arms about some Democrat in Ohio who "took a bribe" . . . which would now probably amount to a tenth of a percent of what many of these Repukes have taken in bribes from Abramoff . . .

1. the problem with the check "scandal"
was it was free overdraft protection where the money came from the "congressional bank" and not your savings account.

basically it was a free loan with zero interest with terms that thye let you keep the money until you have more money.

3. But republicans bounced checks as well as Democrats
yet the republicans were able to turn it into a Democrat scandal and use it to purge Congress of unelthical law breakers :eyes:

2. Yeah. They also claimed that they were for fiscal responsibility.
And Bush said during his campaign that he didn't believe in "nation building".

6. Or policing the world
In one of the debates I believe Bush said that he didn't think it was the job of the United States to go around and police the world.

7. I don't know how things could have gone so wrong in such
a short time.

4. What you gotta realize is
that professional politicians are 98% crooks. All of them, it doesn't matter what party they belong to. Republicans know this, that's why they don't turn on their 'leaders' when they get found out. Democrats are justly disappointed in theirs because, well, I guess they're idealists.

5. And also remember
they said in 2000 when Bush stole the White House that "the grownups were back in town."

8. YES, but they didn't mean they were the party of GOOD morals...
But seriously, there are a couple reasons that the GOP postured that way in '94:

1) Pandering to the fundie base
2) Capitalizing on most folk's ignorance of their own record
3) The willingness of most Americans to tolerate corruption and violence, but to decry anything remotely sexual.

Like most Americans, the GOP is utterly hypocritical. Small wonder they control all 3 branches of government.

Oh, yeah, and fixing elections doesn't hurt 'em, either.
