When does Scooter Libby go on trial
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 06:07 PM by MissWaverly
Novak's famous outing of Valerie Plame: July 14, 2003: "...Valerie Plame, is an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction. Two senior administration officials told me Wilson's wife suggested sending him to Niger to investigate" the allegation."

Wasn't Scooter Libby indicted last fall, when is the trial supposed to go on, will it be
in our lifetime?

Libby has pleaded not guilty and said he looks forward to clearing his good name. A trial date has not been set, but Libby's next court appearance is scheduled for early February. When in early February does Libby appear in court, wasn't he indicted on October 28, 2005?

1. Maybe the question should be "When does Libby NOT go on trial?"
With Reggie Walton on the case, he's probably studying legal notes to see how he can apply the states secret privilege to this criminal case to dismiss it like he and others have applied it to civil cases up to now.

4. I don't think that will fly since the CIA requested the investigation

6. Some also argue that "States Secrets" won't work in criminal cases...
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 08:46 PM by calipendence
Ann Beeson, who was Sibel Edmonds' ACLU lawyer speculated to this effect, since there is other more recent legislation that should supersede this privilege that is supposed to address secure evidence questions but has only been created for criminal cases. But that might not stop someone like Walton to make States Secret or some variant of this other law to somehow "dismiss" this case in a similar fashion, and the Supremes dismissing it the same way they did Sibel's case at the end of November and now Jeffrey Sterling's case today.

7. I really think their power is ebbing
it is expected that Republicans will only be able to hold up if they embrace "reform"
I can't see them letting GWB & crew pull a state secrets stunt, they are still mad
over the wire tapping abuses. I think the days of the law means what we say it does
are over.

8. Then they should have heard this case today...

They're still counting on a lot of these cases staying "under the wire". Libby's case could be different, but if we don't bitch about these cases that are in effect getting ruled on like this every day, they'll figure they can get away with it with Libby too. Especially if they can get Alito on the court this week to avoid a similar Walton ruling being appealed successfully.

9. I agree
also does it not seem ludicrous to you that our Pentagon has been allowed to appeal
the 2nd release of the Abu Ghraib photos as long as it has. Is this not totally ridiculous, they are a government agency, this is information requested under the Freedom of Information Act, how was this ever allowed to dribble down into this ridiculous 2 step.

2. The first wednesday in November, 2008
it would be irresponsible to allow an issue like this to effect the election cycle.

love, the NYT.

5. I would like to see this speeded up
this is ridiculous, it has already been too long especially for something as serious
as this, they never had any trouble scheduling court dates for Clinton

3. My guess? NEVER.
They will delay it as long as possible, then Bush will issue a pardon before it can go to trial, under the NATIONAL SECURITY excuse.
