Alito and his EXXON-MOBILE stock...
This story is unfrickingbelievable. I wonder who the "family friend" is? The timing is certainly a coincidence.

I cannot believe that he was bequested the stock the day of his nomination! OMG.

Peace.

4. I had a different reading of that........
We wrote about Alito's 2004 inheritance of Exxon-Mobil stock on the day he was nominated (although the exact $161,000 amount was revealed in late November, and buried in stories about his 1985 abortion memo disclosed in the same questionaire.)

Regardless, the article calls into question who the "family friend" is that bequeathed him $161,000 in stock.

11. "Coincidence theorists" -- Excellent term!
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 01:25 PM by eppur_se_muova
Let's hope that people will take up this usage whenever the remarkable "coincidences" around the ** cabal's seizure of power are discussed. This is a powerful antidote to the RW denigration by overuse of the term "conspiracy theorists".

Maybe some neutrals will find themselves doing a double think: "concidence theories - wait a minute, are they saying we shouldn't believe in coincidences ? - but coincidences are real, aren't they ? - wait a minute, they're saying this *isn't* a coincidence ?? - oh, wait --"

edit to add: apologies if this was discussed on a thread I missed

5. "Bequeathed" suggests a last will and testament,
doesn't it? And, aren't these documents, once probabted, a matter of public record to ensure that the executor hasn't played fast and loose with things. Of course, I could be wrong. But, if it is...a probate court search should reveal the answer, I would think. Just wondering.

6. This needs to be sent to the Senators - very important
A judge receiving 2 million on nomination day - light years beyond "appearance of impropriety"
Send this to your senator! Spread it wide as well - make it public knowledge - FAST!

conflict of interest cases.

After all, the chance that Alito will not be asked to rule on something that impacts Exxon-Mobil is completely nil. Even if Exxon-Mobil is not a direct party to any matters (in which case we'd hope that Alito would recuse himself), the mega-conglomerate is impacted by environmental laws, by restrictions on campaign contributions, or by court cases affecting the ability to wage war in the Middle East, where most of the world's oil is located. http://www.pnionline.com/dnblog/attytood/

Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. ruled in a 2002 case in favor of the Vanguard mutual fund company at a time when he owned more than $390,000 in Vanguard funds and later complained about an effort to remove him from the case, court records show -- despite an earlier promise to recuse himself from cases involving the company. http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2005/11/03/plaintiff_alleges_alito_conflict/

10. Sent it to KO. This is unbelievable. Also on Truthout:
In his questionnaire, Alito provided new details about his financial holdings, including that he owns $161,000 of Exxon Mobil Corp. stock. Altogether, Alito estimated his net worth at $2.1 million, of which $870,000 is in real estate, $789,000 in stocks and mutual funds, $244,000 in cash and $60,000 in federal Series EE bonds.

According to previous financial disclosures reported last month by the Associated Press, the Exxon Mobil stock was a bequest from a family friend.

13. I wonder if he received this bequest
of $161,000 of Exxon Mobil stock around the time Cheney held his top secret meeting with energy executives to formulate our national energy policy?
