One thing that bothers me about SC nominees.....and Alito...
They are nominated for an independent position in the third branch of government, the judiciary. Yet, they permit themselves to be led around by the nose, and catered to, by partisans in the White House and Senate. It makes them look like they have no scruples. Shouldn't they attempt to create a certain amount of distance between themselves and the partisans in both parties, since they are supposed to be independent judges? Or has the Supreme Court simply become a facade for partisan advantage of the Executive Branch and the Party in power?

1. There's supposed to be a political element in choosing.
Not patronage, but different people have different judgments and they want someone who is going to share those judgments on the court.

It can become partisan. It can be the lowest common denominator. But to the extent politics is about real choices about where our country is going.....
