Rep. Louise Slaughter: Help Me Hold Washington Republicans accountable
by email

Tuesday, January 10, 2006

Dear ()

By now, you have all heard of Representative Tom DeLay permanently stepping down as the House Majority Leader after having been indicted on criminal charges of money laundering in Texas. DeLay's decision to step down closely followed the guilty plea of Republican super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who last week admitted to charges of bribing public officials, tax evasion, and fraud. You have also heard of the Republican Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham from California, who pled guilty to accepting millions of dollars in bribes from defense contractors and resigned in disgrace.

As I mentioned in my national radio address this past Saturday, what we are up against isn't just the shameful work of individuals like these. It's a much broader problem, a problem rooted in the Republican establishment that has held power in our nation's capital for more than a decade.

We can't afford to go on like this. The time for reform and change in Washington is now. And I am going to ask for your support today so that I can continue to serve as a vigorous advocate on your behalf. Help me hold these Washington Republicans accountable for their abuses of power:

Help me raise $11,000 in the next 14 days so that I can have the resources to maintain my campaign website, which allows me to communicate and spread our progressive message of an honest and open government, one that is supposed to be led by representatives who uphold the highest standards of integrity.

You have the power to provide an invaluable boost to our campaign for an honest and ethical Congress. Your financial support in the form of $25, $50, $75, or whatever you can afford will allow me to continue to reach out and work hand in hand with the progressive netroots movement. Together, we can defeat the Republican pattern of cronyism, bullying, corporate greed, and abuse of power that has taken hold of Washington. So, please contribute to my campaign today:

I need to raise the $11,000 in next 14 days so that I can continue to use the organizing and communication tools of my website to keep fighting for oversight and real ethics reform in Congress. The financial support you provide is critical to our work to restore integrity to Washington, curb abuses of power by corrupt leaders like Tom DeLay, and weaken the influence sleazy lobbyists like Jack Abramoff have been exerting over our legislative process. Stand with me today:

Thank you again for all you do to restore faith in our democracy.

In Solidarity,

Rep. Louise M. Slaughter

1. Rep. Slaughter is one of the good
people in Congress. I hope members will join her and Conyers now that the tide is turning. I'll pass this on ~
