Poll question: Will Joe Lieberman vote to confirm or reject Alito?
I find this to be a difficult question.

16. why would the abortion issue
make him think about Bob Ney?
Ney is the corrupt republican congressman from Ohio, close associate of Abramoff, and has been in the news quite a bit recently.

3. No-brainer--he'll vote to reject...it'll provide him cover (so he thinks)
by voting against this freeper. It's what most of the Dems will do--instead of fighting for a fillibuster, instead of getting out there and repeating over and over that this is the end of Roe v. Wade, instead of actually fighting for something, they'll just lean back and say "We'll we voted against him, what more do you want?"

Complacent twits.

4. Holy Joe will vote for Alito
and he will not support a filibuster.

Remember, Holy Joe loves Bush!

5. Many Connecticut constituents are pro-Choice.
If Lieberman votes to confirm Alito, he opens the door for a primary challenger or Weicker to move in and capitalize on that vulnerability.

He seals his senate seat by voting 'no' on the judge.

7. I voted confirm...
...but now reading the other responses I think there is a good chance that he will vote to reject.

8. Lieberman's words on Alito, November 8th
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 08:15 PM by uniclave80
This statement doesn't really clarify his position, IMO:

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., said Alito told him the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision establishing abortion rights “was precedent on which people, a lot of people, relied, and had been precedent now for decades and therefore deserved great respect.”

Lieberman called that “encouraging,” but also said the federal judge had not assured him that he would not overturn Roe.

with faxes too! However, on confirmation, I'm not so sure... I'd like to think that he wouldn't...

LIEberman needs to know what's going on outside of his and Bush Inc's bubble.

11. Alito has enough votes to be confirmed so JoeMentum will...
vote against him. If it was close, Joe would vote for Alito.

12. I think Joe is mostly driven by the desire to protect Israel.
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 08:50 PM by ladjf
I don't see Alito as being in Israel's advantage. Therefore, my guess is that he will reject Alito.

17. Hmmm. I wonder why so many of the most passionate
supporters of Israel I know are so hacked off at Lieberman (all East Coast Democrats, incidentally)? This is just a question. Does anyone know why? I actually don't know what Joe's angle here is, precisely, and the "it's about Israel" explanation only seems like part of his rationale.

14. I actually think Joe will vote 'no.' He's on thin ice in CT and knows it.
True, he may not care, and may be planning to complete his jump to the neo-con's table this year, anyway, but if he votes for Alito he won't just leave CT and the Dems in disfavor, he'll leave in infamy.

18. Joe's approval has slipped 11% the last year
And his support among democrats is eroding. his approval among Democrats dropped from 70 to 55 percent.

22. I think he will vote AGAINST Alito.
Here are the votes FOR Alito I'm concerned about ...

Nelson is gone, so count him out.

Biden might vote for him.

I don't think Joe L. will, because even the Pubs in his state have some who are pro abortion rights. For his political ambitions he doesn't need to vote FOR Alito, since he's already got center status with his war and God positions.

25. It's safe for him to reject and it makes him look like a Democrat so he
might reject. He goes for the safe things that he hasn't been bought off for....unless AIPAC has a stake in the Prez having full power.
