8. sure he will, unless he gets defeated for being too liberal
bush is running a 14% net approval in Nebraska, according to survey USA

http://surveyusa.com/50State2006/50StateBush060117State.htm

Only Utah and Idaho are more pro-bush.

How we have a Democratic senator in Nebraska at all is the shocking thing, not that that Nelson is voting for Alito.

16. Not unusual.
Democrats that come from the deep Red states are extremely moderate or even bordering on being a Republican. Here in Oklahoma the democratic challenger to Coburn was "un"Democratic that when the two went on national TV to debate, many posters here thought that Carson was the Republican!

30. Nelson switched parties years ago (but still has his stripes)
Nelson switched parties so he could run for Governor when the Republicans said they already had their man. He has never really been a Democrat.

12. Of course he will...
He is way out in front in the polls...

From Nebraska this is what we are gonna get...I'll take it. He votes with theparty 60% of the time, and he is a vote for Harry reid.

He's a fairly reliable vote for the repukes...I'm curious where you got the number? Is there a link for that?

26. Yes ...so the solution to that problem...
Is to dump him overboard and get a true hard right Republican instead....losing a seat, and a vote for Harry Reid as Majority leader.

Brilliant strategy!

25. Nelson is a place holder...no more
without him we'd have one less seat in the Senate. Jim Jeffords played a similar role for the repubs. I imagine Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins are viewed similarly. What we should do is offer some of those repubs a deal...Jeffordize them. Of course they could do the same to our Nelsons.

14. In the best of all possible worlds Nelson wouln't vote
for Alito. But Nelson is from Nebraska, a state as red as my own is blue. We need him. He's up for re-election. If we can retain him, and take PA, OH and 3 other seats, we get back the Senate. Even if we narrow the gap to say, 52-48, bush will have an almost impossible time getting through far right judges, and not just SCOTUS Justices either; we havve the rest of the fed bench to worry about. As has ben oft said politics is the art of the possible.

17. Is there any reason to think that Nelson wouldn't vote for a "far-right"
Judge? Alito isn't "far-right" enough to qualify? The Part of changing the dynamic to make a vote against Alito "campaignable" is a united front. Enough opposition and people begin to think. We don't have enough opposition to this Junta, so they'll continue to win.

I lived through Johnson, Nixon, Reagan - and nothing I've ever seen approaches the spineless compliance of this Congress. They are next to useless.

28. It's simple
and I don't know why you guys can't figure it out. If the dems take back the Senate, they get the majority on the Judiciary Committee. They can stop right wing judges right there. Is Nelson on Judiciary? Why, no. In fact, with dems in charge, bush wouldn't even bother sending wingnuts to the Senate. That's how it makes a difference, and that's how it works. Try learning something about procedure. It's just not all about ideology.

27. no, feinstein is in trouble, and so is the DNC
and democrats who DON'T support this

I have stopped contributing to the DNC until I see action, and made my intentions know to them. That does NOT mean I do not give to individual candidates, but not to the group as a whole

The alito nomination is an extremely big test for me. It is NOT about winning or losing, but doing the right thing

I can understand how they would NOT have tried to stop roberts because he had no paper trail, but alito, there is no question where he stands, there is also no question that he lied on an application about being in CAP, and didn't recuse himself in a Vanguard case in which he PROMISED HE WOULD

11. this is about Ben (NE)
I don't know whether Bill had announced a decision yet. He does tend to weigh the stacks of phone messages, though, so be sure to call his office.
