Houston Outlaws Renting Rooms For Prostitution

HOUSTON -- In an effort to crack down on the illegal sex trade, city officials have banned motels from knowingly renting rooms for prostitution.

The Houston City Council unanimously approved the new rules Wednesday, despite some reservations that motel clerks could be unfairly held responsible for prostitution they didn't know about.

Capt. Steve Jett, head of the police department's vice division, said the ordinance puts a high burden of proof on police and prosecutors to prove that motel workers knew. He said some motel clerks have told police they stay in business by renting to prostitutes and, in some cases, police have seen them sell condoms or take kickbacks.

"This gives us an opportunity for us to go in there and tell them to clean up their act," Jett said.
