Holocaust denier Irving getting fan mail in jail

Rightwing British historian David Irving, who has been jailed in Austria ahead of his trial next month on charges of denying the Holocaust, has been getting 200 to 300 items of fan mail a week, his lawyer said yesterday.

A Vienna court ruled again yesterday that Irving, 67, must remain in jail at least until his trial starts on February 20, rejecting an offer from the defence attorney, Elmar Kresbach, to post $24,500 (£13,780) bail.

Irving has begun writing his memoirs and was receiving fan mail from Australia, Canada, China, New Zealand and many European countries, Mr Kresbach said.

Yeah, people like him spouting bullshit can lead to atrocities, but so can stifling free speech. I suppose a line needs to be drawn somewhere, but this makes me a bit uncomfortable. :shrug: He's becoming a martyr and getting fan mail.

Meanwhile, our own dicks spout all the bullshit they want and hardly anyone calls them on it.

For many years I had the fortune of knowing a man who had survived the Buchenwald death camp. The man was amazingly upbeat about the world despite all the horrors he had seen. That changed one night. The Nazis were planning a March in Skokie and a "professor" at a nearby university came out with an article that the Holocoust didn't happen. The author had the stones to give a public lecture on the topic...where the survivor went up in the middle of this man's speech and stood in his face...then rolled up his sleeve exposing his tatoo with his number clearly visible to everyone in the hall...he then asked the "professor" to explain what caused this. The lecture came to an abrupt end.
