Will the injured ABC anchor give the Iraqi insurgents an epiphany?
It's pretty clear that when somebody in the U.S. MSM dies, is injured, or is put into jail for refusing to identify sources (har har), they make such a big freakin' narcissistic fuss, as if someone actually important was being affected, even though it's just the RNC-talking-point-repeating news parrots who most of us don't think much of.

Anyway, it would seem plausible that the insurgents will now learn, as we already know, that when you go after our news anchors, reporters and even camera operators, you get major news play. And when you get major news play, you get more American citizens calling for a pullout.

Of course, I don't want violence visited upon anyone, but I just thought there's an obvious connection here that I wonder about, and that I wonder if the insurgents have figured this out.

3. Apparently that anchor/actor guy is a lot more important than anybody
else in Iraq. It's been headlines for days.

8. It's only been a headline for 24 hours
just happened yesterday. Though I agree cause it's one of their own and an anchor the media will be all over this for probably the entire week. But I did see in the coverage that they were explaining the number of solders injured by IEDs, the brain injuries they suffer, the treatment, casualty rates, etc.

It also points out how unsafe Iraq remains this long after idiot boy went to war.

4. This event is supposed to infuriate the Americans to bolster support
for the war.
It is tragic that a news anchor was injured in war. It is a national loss and we all are supposed to be enraged and want to sign our kids up to fight bu$h illegal war.
Why else would all the news agencies run such in depth stories on this?

2. that's a good point
There are two ways to react to this and I think your version would be the most common. RWers still point to the beheadings from earlier in the war and hold this up as evidence that we have to stay to get rid of these types.

5. But you're assuming that people _care_ about news anchors.
Also, I'm thinking that if what has happened is supposed to enrage us, I think that tactic (if it is a tactic) will backfire. That's because it has seemed before that as the news from Iraq is reported more and appears worse, the more the American people oppose it.

9. I think it will give the average American couch-warmer an epiphany
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 01:43 PM by npincus
... because these dolts who don't understand that we are embroiled in another nation's civil war and need to leave Iraq NOW, are having the violence, stupidity and pointlessness come to their livingrooms. Because their ABC World News co-anchor had a piece of his skull removed and IED shrapnel extracted from his brain.

There may be a silent ripple effect here at home. People don't seem to give a shit until an issue touches their lives, comes home to them. And people who watch, like and trust this anchor to bring them the news every night will be shaken by this.

11. If they gave this much coverage to the average soldier's death
Bush would have been defeated and the war would be over. It is motivated by narcissism but I'm glad to see the media do at least some of its job covering the gritty reality of war, instead of glossing over it as usual.
