A&E Original Movie: Flight 93
On tonight at 9pm Eastern.

Anyone know details about this? Is this supposed to be factual in any regard?

1. I'm sure they're claiming its "factual"
But in any event, interesting timing, isn't it?

3. It sounds horrible
Go to www.washingtonpost.com, and read Tom Shales's review of it. He absolutely trashed it in every way. Shales is a pretty reliable and quite liberal reviewer (and a Pulitzer Prize winner), but I sometimes agree with him. His review of this travesty was enough to confirm it for me.

Here's the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/29/AR2006012901118_pf.html

Personally, I think the idea of capitalizing on that part of the tragedy is as cheesy and smarmy and exploitive as anything can be. I'm disgusted with A&E for this one.

10. My local TV Critic trashed it - however I will watch to see
what propaganda they're going to show about the WH bunker.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06029/644108.stm

<snip>

Where "The Flight That Fought Back" stuck closely to events solely on Flight 93, A&E's film also checks in with flight controllers, airline operations centers and a White House bunker.

Directed by Peter Markle ("Faith of My Fathers") from a script by Nevin Schreiner ("Deep Family Secrets"), "Flight 93" is a pastiche of familiar hallmarks from the disaster and thriller genres. It's no surprise the movie begins with a score whose urgency brings to mind "24" or ends with elegiac music that's reminiscent of James Horner's score from "Titanic."

Where the movie blows it is in the details: Sometimes the plane looks like it belongs to United Airlines, sometimes it doesn't. Usually it's a 757, but in one shot from above as the plane is cleared for takeoff, it's not a 757 that's getting ready to soar. And two people can easily walk side-by-side down the aisle of the plane, which is not realistic.

A&E says it received support from family members of some of the passengers, but I can't imagine they'll be happy with one specific moment: In the frenzy of bursting into the cockpit seconds before the crash, one passenger (possibly Tom Burnett, although it's hard to tell given the shaky footage) is depicted as bleeding from his abdomen, presumably stabbed during the struggle with a hijacker before entering the cockpit. That's not something that's been publicly revealed in government releases to date, although screenwriter Schreiner said one of the passengers can be heard saying "I'm injured" in a still-unreleased cockpit audio recording.

16. "I'm injured?"
Oh, brother. Not exactly realistic dialogue if someone was stabbed. "He stabbed me," maybe. "I'm injured" might come out of someone's mouth if they busted up their hand knocking down a door or something. I would think they'd be too busy trying to subdue hijackers and keep the plane from crashing to give a personal health update, though.

I can easily see why your local critic trashed this garbage.

I hate made-up-for-TV stories.

8. Does anybody here believe the official story of Flight 93?
I'm struggling between trusting what the federal government tells me and what my instincts and my sensibilities are saying. My faith in the federal government has been virtually annihilated, and I doubt that faith will ever truly recover in my lifetime.

9. No, because I remember driving to work on the morning of 9-11.
I had the radio on in the car and was listening to the national CBS radio feed through the local WUSN. They interviewed an eyewitness to the crash right it after happened and this guy said he saw a US military plane shoot Flight 93 down.

18. I just watched it
The story focused more on the passengers and their families than the events of 9/11. For the most part, it made our defense system look totally incompetent.

21. I couldn't stop myself from watching it
or from thinking it might have been like that inside the plane, up through the hijackers taking it over. It was very dramatic. I did wonder if four determined hijackers would actually tie red scarves around their heads before getting up.

After that, well, let's just say I might have bought it if I'd never read anything about Flight 93. But then I'd have to ask myself if a guy who had decided to storm the cockpit after what - an hour? - of violently erratic flying would really stop to recite the Lord's Prayer with a Verizon wireless chick, knowing three other planes had been crashed into buildings, and all the other guys would wait for him and stuff like that.

24. I didn't see any political
overtones to the movie. It did portray our air defense as being rather inadequate. It was mostly about how the families of the passengers responded to the hijacking of their loved ones. I agree with the Magistrate; it wasn't a bad movie even though there probably was some poetic license involved.
