Folks…It is Time to Change the Government and the Constitution
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 08:54 PM by The Whiskey Priest
We are being asked to live under an outdated form of government and it is time to consider making some changes. To that point let me state what I think needs to change.

We need to redraw the states, there does not need to be 50 states.

Inside the states we do not need half the county governments.

We need to do away with every state gets 2 Senators, Senators need to be apportioned based on population

The congressional or political districts need to be redraw and rectangular containing a specified number of people.

We need to go to a parliamentary form of government, where the government must maintain confidence to continue to govern.

We need to go to a divided bureaucracy.. Generalist and specialist…with the generalist being rotated at specified times throughout the government.

We need to go to 3 day voting and paper ballots, with two of the days being a weekend day.

We need to have the election period not exceeding three weeks.

We need to outlaw sound bite political advertising, and criminalize attack ads and lying in political ads

All political offices within the subdivisions of the state would be filled according to a lottery similar to jury duty.

We need to require public service duty for all citizens, no exemptions

Guns are allowed, required for all citizens in organized military duty, you want a gun join the army.

Oh yes, this first past the pole elections should be replaced with proportional representation…..based on the number of votes each party receives.

Ten year appointment of all judges, not lifetime. A decade is long enough.

That is my list…

1. Many good ideas there...
I would be happy if we focussed on the voting, first. (and I think it might be a *bit* of an uphill battle asking people to redraw the states! ;-) )

Dead is dead and this system has been so horrifically corrupted to be declared deceased.

The political system of course but economically even worse. Then again they are deeply related to one another.

I might suggest a little Demarchy for better representation...

EDIT: I should add that MSA's are entirely more representational than are our jerrymandered congressional districts. And yes I have a GIS background, let me at it.

3. We need...
Parlimentary government, the Speaker of the House is Prime Minister.
Proportional representation in both houses, the House is PR by state, the Senate is nationwide PR.
The size of the House in increased to 800 representatives, the senate is increased to 3 senators per state.
Only the House can initiate legislation.
The Senate can either pass a bill into law or veto it back to the House, the veto can be overturned by a 2/3 vote in the house.
The Senate confirms federal offices and accepts treaties as now, except that SCOTUS justices require a 3/5 vote.
SCOTUS justices are appointed for a single 12-year term.
Elections are publically financed.
The voting period is 3 days long.
The District of Columbia is abolished, DC residents become residents of Maryland.
The Federal Reserve will be a federal agency, not a corporation.
Corporate personhood is abolished.
Religious references are banned from being on currency, public buildings, in oaths for public office and in court, etc.
The minimum wage and income tax brackets are linket to inflation

5. I disagree with only one of your proposals
the senate is increased to 3 senators per state. There is no reason Wyoming should have 3 Senators the same a California, or Oklahoma have 3 the same as New York

6. I've been saying this for a couple of weeks now.
We the people have a right to demand the government we want. When our government has gone rogue, ignoring the Constitution because it can, it's time to form a new government with a new charter. I believe that the states can do this. They can convene a Continental Congress, draw up the necessary documents and put it up for a vote to the people. Since the states control the voting, the federal government really has no say unless they try to institute martial law. Even then they have no say if the people want to vote on this.

Whadda ya think?

7. Let's just divvy up the land and go our own ways while we're at it.
A coin toss.

The winner gets to divide the country into two relativey equal halves. The loser picks which half they want.

No way, no how, no thanks...

BTW, our Constitution isn't the problem. Politicians that pretend it doesn't exist are the problem...
