Please call this number to express your outrage over gay marriage!
OR... do as I did, and call to express your outrage over REPUKE LYING HATEMONGERS.

No, I'm not kidding. The following number was given to me in an automated call which came onto my answering machine: (877) 266-6277. It is a toll-free number. The recording ASKS people to call, and you actually reach a live person.

The story: my phone rang and I didn't pick up, but instead listened to the answering machine to see who it was.

Turns out, it was the republican party calling. Oh, they didn't give that as their name, but who else could possibly make a call as asinine as the one I'm about to describe?

The message made several really stupid and disgustingly rabble-rousing comments about gay marriage. I remember one statement was something like this: "The state of Massachusetts has made it legal for persons of the same sex to marry, and so now those persons can move into other states and whatever state they move into, that state has to recognize their union as a marriage." Then the automated call would say, "Press 1 on your keypad if you strongly disagree". Then it made another outrageous and pathetically hate-mongering statement, and once again asked the listener to "press one to express your agreement".

I just listened to the crap, not having picked up the phone. At the end, it said, "Call 877-266-6277 to sign the petition and express your agreement with this important grassroots movement." It gave some phony name of some phony "grassroots" group, blah blah blah.

When the call had ended, I called the number. I started out, "Look, don't call MY number with your fearmongering and your cheap plays on people's emotions, because I refuse to be fooled into yet another dictatorship by being stupid enough to listen to your ridiculous doom-saying about an issue that is really nobody's business." Except, I didn't get that far. The man literally was trying to shout me down.

It was hilarious. I said, "I thought you WANTED our opinions! Isn't that why you're calling people?"

Would you believe, at one point he actually got flustered and said, "We don't want THOSE opinions!" I said, "Oh, I get it--you only want opinions that agree with your OWN fascist one!"

It was fun.

So he hung up on me.

So I called again and asked to speak to Mr. Rove. "Mr. Who?" he asked. "Mr. Rove." "Mr.... Rogue?" he asked. "No--Mr. Rove. R-O-V-E." He said, "What is the full name?" "Karl Rove," I said. Playing it cool (for a change), he replied, "There's no one by that name here." So then I launched into my opinion of their fearmongering and hatemongering again, and started in again about how *I* wasn't going to be fooled into accepting more dictatorships like the one we've already got, no matter what they told me (gay marriage! horrors!:sarcasm: ).

Please, please, everyone call this number and tell the repukelican PHONIES what you think of their pathetic, stupid, fake, "grassroots" (my ASS!) bullshit.

I am hoping enough people call to give them LOTS of work to do--and LOTS of explaining to do. Remember, they INVITE people to call!

Unless, of course, they're hiding something from us.:)

Notes from our latest call: they told my significant other, "We're trying to let people know about companies that give benefits to "THOSE PEOPLE" ". Then they said, "You may not want to do business with such companies." My significant other replied, "I don't mix business with politics... if I did, I wouldn't buy gasoline from any of the oil companies, look at what they're doing to America."

Of course the chickenhawk repukes finally hung up.

12. Have no fear, it's a toll-free number. And just punch *67 right before
you dial it, and they won't be able to tell the number you're calling from--so they won't be able to get YOUR number.

16. Can't block caller id
My understanding is that you can not block caller id when you call toll free numbers. And while it may be fun to call I really don't want to get my phone number on these people's caller list for them to turn around and sell for a profit.

20. Yes you can! Here's how caller ID works:
The only time you can't block your number from appearing is if the receiving party has ENHANCED Caller ID. IF and only if the receiving party has enhanced caller ID, when you punch *67 and then dial their number, you will automatically get a recorded message which will tell you: "Your call has been delivered correctly. However, the party you are calling has chosen not to accept any number which does not appear on Enhanced caller ID."

So if it's someone for whom you can't use *67 to hide your number, you get ample warning, and can just hang the phone up and not call.

I don't think these assholes have caller ID, however. And I know they don't have enhanced caller ID, b/c we called them 3 times, dialing *67 before the call each time, and never got that recording--the calls went right through with our number hidden.

27. ANI technology
I'm just passing on what I've heard this from numerous sources including from quite a few people here when everyone was calling Senators on toll free numbers - that toll free numbers can by-pass the caller id blocking and get your number.

From US West:

"In some cases, such as on some party- or coin-operated lines, as
well as calls to pay-per-call (900) or toll-free numbers (such as
800/888/877 numbers), the network does not have the capability to block
your underlying phone number even if you invoke Caller ID blocking. And
there may be other services that rely on this type of automatic number
identification (ANI) technology, such as cable companies that offer
movies keyed to the automatic delivery of your phone number or pizza
companies that route your calls to the closest stores based on your
number. There are a variety of businesses that subscribe to these types
of services. By federal regulation, however, businesses that utilize
this technology can only use it to provide you the service in question
or one directly related to it. And, because federal law requires phone
numbers associated with facsimile transmissions to be released as part
of the facsimile, these phone numbers are not blocked either."

39. If you're concerned, use a different phone. There are still a few
pay phones out there.

"By federal regulation, however, businesses that utilize
this technology can only use it to provide you the service in question
or one directly related to it."
Hmm. I wonder what "service" is provided by the business behind the phone call I got?

When we call Domino's, which does index their customers by phone number, I notice that the person ALWAYS asks for the phone number. This tells me that Domino's is not using the technology which would automatically ID the caller's phone number. If a big operation like Domino's isn't using it, makes me wonder if these two-bit hatemongers would have it?

Judging by the call they left on my answering machine, plus the 3 calls we made back to them, IMO they do not WANT to hear from, nor have anything to do with, people who don't agree with them.

when you always go straight to voicemail.

You can keep several phones going for hours at a time.

Teen sought in attack at gay bar

Ray Henry
Associated Press
February 2, 2006

This photo released by the New Bedford, Mass. Police Department shows suspect Jacob D. Robida, 18, of New Bedford who police say attacked patrons of a gay bar early today. (Associated Press)

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — The attacker hid his weapons in a hooded sweat shirt as he strode into a popular gay tavern known for its quiet atmosphere and trouble-free customers.

The young man flashed an apparently fake ID, the bartender said, and calmly ordered a drink, asking if he was at a gay bar. Told that he was, he attacked the patrons with a hatchet and handgun, sending three men to the hospital early today, one with critical injuries.

Authorities in this historic seaport searched for Jacob D. Robida, 18, who was charged in an arrest warrant with assault, attempted murder and civil-rights violations.

According to court papers attached to the warrant, Robida’s mother told police he came home around 1 a.m., bleeding from the head, then left again. Officers who searched his bedroom found what they described as “Nazi regalia” and anti-Semitic writings on the wall, the police affidavit said. It said Robida was recognized by a woman in the bar.

The bartender at Puzzles Lounge told the Associated Press the assailant walked in around midnight and drank a rum on the rocks. He ordered another and walked to the back of the bar, where two men were playing pool.

I want to have words with that kid's mother! Nice job she's done raising that puke!

By the way, the kid has a Myspace page somewhere. You can apparently email him well-wishes.

They showed some of his nazi stuff and Insane Clown Possee stuff, too.

The "pro-family" people have more blood on their hands.

You know where I saw one of those anti-gay-marriage bumper stickers for the first time? I saw it on the news. It was on the back bumper of a man who had intentionally run-over his ex-wife and sat with his kids and watched her die. Those are the "pro-family" people.

34. These people are liars
"The state of Massachusetts has made it legal for persons of the same sex to marry, and so now those persons can move into other states and whatever state they move into, that state has to recognize their union as a marriage."

That statement is untrue. If a gay/lesbian couple marries in MA, then moves to another state where same-sex marriage is not legal, their marriage is not recognized under the law. The group making the call is simply trying to raise ire, fear, support, and quite possibly funds by their manipulation of the truth.

They didn't want to listen.

Of course, this bunch behind this number--the ones who called my phone--are not really what they represent themselves to be. They pretend to be some "grassroots" so-called "protection of our (so-called) values" group.

In reality, I think they are some cynical group who are trying to whip ignorant people into a frenzy for either political ends, or for some CROOKED business purpose.

And they don't hesitate to injure gay people while doing it.

Why would they care if some idiot gets whipped up into a frenzy and, say, goes into a gay bar and attacks people with a hatchet? (See an earlier post on this thread for news article.) All they care about is accomplishing their own cheap political or monetary goal--and to hell with anyone they hurt along the way.

OMG these people called me like 6 months ago when my home number was still my number. I listened to through it so that I could speak to someone and request that they remove my number. After all, I am on the DO NOT CALL (doesn't work) list. When I pressed the appropriate number it hung up on me, how coincidental????? I think not. Anyways, my number is now my cell phone number and naturally I do not want to waste my minutes on junk calls. It seems like EVERY Friday I get a call from this number. The first one on my cell I got ahold of someone and the woman said she was putting me down not to be called anymore. The next one I pressed 1 and said that I am against these calls coming to my cell phone and the ignorant woman laughed and hung up on me. Then I called the number and said that I am again requesting for them not to call me anymore. The idiot said "yeah" and hung up on me like I was wasting his time.

How can such ignorant people try to sit there and pretend to be better than everyone else? They are only promoting their ignorance. It's so hypocritical.

I actually was just doing a google search on the number because I am trying to find a way to report them for harassment because this has gone on long enough and came across this site. These people have me so annoyed. If anyone does know where I can report them or how i can please email me at silvrcraze@mchsi.com It would be greatly appreciated because I hate to have to turn my cell off at work in case of an emergency but my boss isn't liking these calls every Friday on our busiest day.

United American Technologies

United American Technologies is an Oklahoma-based telephone service and Internet Service Provider which has become the center of a controversy concerning its telemarketing techniques, which include anti-gay polemics.

The telemarketing campaign, originally run by a nonprofit organization called "Faith, Family and Freedom" would begin its pitch by asking the callee if they were opposed to same sex marriage. If the callee responded positively, they were then transferred to a United American Technologies representative who would explain to them how the more common telephone service providers, such as AT&T, MCI and Verizon were supporters of gay marriage and child pornography, and that United American Technologies is "the only carrier that is taking an active stand against same sex marriages and hardcore child pornography".
